I made this same observation a couple days back. The difference is that the dbacks have addressed their weakness without creating a new weakness on their MLB squad.

The Pads addressed their offense last year, but they decimated their defense in the process, while picking up mainly questionable bats in the process.

I'm not sold on Preller. He's very competitive, which is fine. However, his competitiveness went to far last offseason. This offseason he's done nothing, but shed payroll. I'm just waiting for him to trade one of the starting pitchers for prospects.

I'd expect one or more of the SP's traded, with Ross having the most value imo. Shedding some money and moving some pieces for prospects isn't the worst idea, but I don't want a total fire sale. As much as I want to see them compete in 2016 with the ASG being there, it's doubtful and hopefully Preller realizes that and doesn't add another bad contract to the team to try and make them contenders(I'd be worried about giving Ian Desmond a big contract and with our lack of an ML ready SS it seems like someone Preller would go after).

Damn, Giants have thrown some money at questionable starting pitching. They better hope both he and samardzija live up to it.

He had a 4.1 fWAR last season. If that is questionable, I'm down with the ????? The contract is too long for my liking. I hope he pitches lights out for 2 years and opts out tbh.

Scrabble OTOH is a def gamble but our park and infielders should clean some of that shitiness right off of him.

So are the dogs even contenders anymore? This division is looking like a 2-team division again.

And the bully and manager. He won't be left in to bomb with a strong bully behind him.

Did you get a chance to see any of the local coverage on CSN about the signing? Firstly, I think i'm really going to like him. He might be blowing smoke, but he said this is where he wanted to be, so I'm good with that; I didn't get that feeling about Leake. He seemed less than thrilled to be here, but I still want him around at this point. Secondly, they were saying that he thought he was tipping pitches and fixed that towards the end of the season and his stats improved almost immediately. If his mechanics start skewing and are that easily tweaked, I'm good with Rags being the one that is able to spot it and fix whatever ails him.

Wonder if this will make them push harder and give up more to get Fernandez.

Johnny was hot garbage for 90% of his Royals career. Depending on which Cueto shows up next year, this could be a great signing or a total cluster.

But outside of his Royals career, He has pretty much been a monster his entire career. The problem is that the Royals portion of his career is the most recent sampling, even if it is only a few months.

Right, I totally agree. But, that is what would worry me. I don't know, maybe he just wasn't comfortable there and he'll be fine.

Definitely a concern point. But the 6 years concerns me more.

Coming into the off-season, Cueto was my target #3. I am happy to get him. And as was stated earlier, The Giants got him and Scrabble for less than Zona got Greinke for.

First the Giants overpaid for Samardzija, now they overpaid for Cueto. $220 million for two pitchers and the Giants are no better than they were when the season ended. $220 million for two pitchers who will not even be the team's ace. $220 million for two pitchers and the San Francisco Giants are still not as good as the Los Angeles Dodgers; even without Zack Greinke. The Giants' streak of alternating between not making the playoffs and winning the World Series will end in 2016.

Not better than they were???

Not even going to honor this with anything more than that...

And he was a monster in a pinball stadium hitters park, and in the NL. Same with Samardzija. Feeling good about these moves.
