So I was thinking this morning.

We all have had our share of bitching about bad calls and the refs screwed that one up kinda thing. Why does the NHL not adopt s similar system like the NFL?

Coach gets a flag or something and can dispute a call. Any call. The ref gets to have a look via a monitor and see if he blew it and reverse said call. 1 flag and if over ruled and play on ice stands the TO is taken away.

Seems kinda simple to me. What say you?

Nope, Lets keep the human element in the game. I know they make mistakes like the players and coaches do. Lets just keep the replays for goal reviews and that's it.

I'm not interested in turning this into the NFL where it takes 3+ hours to play a game that has 12 - 14 min of actual play. Besides, They use replay and still don't get it right.

If I had one thing I would change with the way the games are called now, I would like to see more calls for diving. With a rule that says when you call a dive the initial penalty is wiped out. That way the divers team goes shorthanded instead of even up.

They could use a professional review board, and they can review the performance of the refs. If there is a problem found, they address it behind closed doors (fine, re-training, whatever) but the public never finds out about it.

Too many issues, their contract isn't renewed the next season, and again the public is never told why.

Refs can be bad, and should be dealt with. But the last thing you want is to give some of the more whiny and paranoid fanbases fodder to their conspiracy theories.

But leave the flow of the game alone. The game is too dependent on momentum and a coach with a flag can really screw that up (and they will know it.. I could see them getting thrown every time you have tired guys on the ice after an icing.

And player safety and supplemental discipline needs to be handled by a former ref, not a former GM or Player.

Especially when a former GM or player has aspirations of leaving the position to seek employment with a NHL team. Bottom line, it just can't be one guy making these decisions, there needs to be a panel or committee.

Or when the former player is responsible for reviewing situations involving former teammates of his.

Or when the former player is responsible for reviewing situations involving former teammates of his.

Or teams that are rivals of his former team. Or stars of his former teams.

Or... well, any number of things.
