Clean hit from Despres results in a fight, hoping for an instigator here. Couterier was trying to dodge the hit and Despres caught his shoulder. If there's no instigator I don't understand why the rule exists.

Agreed. Umby should have at least got a rough. By definition, the hit *was* interference, but not enough reason for Umberger to try and start a fight. Couturier put himself in a bad spot.

it was interference but it certainly wasn't a dirty hit to warrant a fight. looked a lot worse than it was. most of the damage was done when he hit his head on the leg of his own teammate

Oh, no doubt about interference. Was a penalty, just didn't warrant that response. In fact, Despres could've ruined Couturier, but held back. He tucked the elbow and basically just ran into him. I just don't understand why that rule is a thing if we pretend it doesn't exist.
