In the 70s and 80s I remember a lot of taunting. Not much dancing though.

There was the infamous "Ickey Shuffle".

The Ickey Shuffle was a touchdown celebration done by former National Football League fullback Elbert "Ickey" Woods of the Cincinnati Bengals after he would score a touchdown. Woods would shuffle his feet to the right and hold the football out to the right, shuffle his feet to the left and hold the football out to the left, and finally finish by doing three hops to the right and spiking the football into the ground.[1] This is largely considered[by whom?] by many to be the most famous touchdown dance in NFL history. The dance was in danger of being prohibited by NFL rules concerning planned celebrations, but after investigation, was not banned.[2]

Bold -> LMAO! Did they call in Magnum PI, to look at his steps?

meh.....pro sports at their very foundation are for entertainment purposes

if it puts butts in the seats then let 'em dance

If they want to dance let them go on dancing with the stars. Score a TD just flip the ball to the ref and get the hell off the field. The touchdown wouldn't have been scored without the help of their teammates. Maybe some of these guys really do know how ridicules they look gyrating around.

Exactly. Mike up all the players on the field. If JJ was trash talking Tate for all the world to hear in the way that Steve Smith said that he did the week before, we may not have so much sympathy for his emotions. Any game for that matter, there is crazy shit said and done on the football field every week that most people could handle. Tate got a well deserved flag for breaking a rule that he knew he shouldn't have. But all this fake outrage and disgust over the act itself is really fucking ridiculous.

Excatly.

and all does people who think that does td's should be taken away. Is there a flag for trash talking? SO what if Jenkins trashed talked Tate before the snap and then Tate scored and flipped the ball to the ref?

I would have taunted JJ too

I can't believe some of your responses here. There is an obvious difference in celebrating and taunting. We should celebrate when someone makes a great play. But we don't shit on a guy when he fucks up. period.

Would you laugh in someone's face if they got cancer or AIDS? Of course not. Do you laugh at the people in Haiti when they get hit by a nasty earthquake? Of course not. Why on Earth would you go out of your way to make someone feel worse about themselves when they are down and out? Its classless, and there is no room for it in a civilized society. PERIOD.

As a Seahawks fan, what Tate did was extremely classless. And he does that shit all the time. Its shows that he classless and reflects poorly on the rest of the team as well. If you want to celebrate making a good play, then by all means, go for it. But don't go out of your way to make the guy that you beat feel like shit.

I think if the taunting happens during the play, then negate the play. If the taunting comes afterwards, then the play should stand. Its that simple. Do we really want what Tate did to be acceptable behavior? We're fucking Americans, we're better than that!

The Panthers - Rams game had some taunting between Steve Smith and Janoris Jenkins, and things ratcheted up from there, into eventual brawling. But if the league is really concerned about this, they should target the players, maybe with half-game suspensions like the NCAA has for targeting. I would find even this action extreme, but not so much as revoking a TD, which would invite a shitstorm.

:agree:

When did fucking up coverage and allowing a TD become the same thing as contracting AIDS!?

It's a god damned game. Fuck off with your whiney pathetic bullshit.

If he wants to stop, take his pants off, take a shit on the defender who couldn't cover him, and can still score I'm all for it.

And why I he hell is everybody referring to Tate waving as "what Tate did"

It's like you're all talking about fucking voldemort or something

tatetaunt.gif

I just don't see what the big deal is....if you don't want to get waved at you have 2 options......run faster or find another job

These guys get paid pretty damn well and I'm sure there's plenty of practice squad talent out there that are more than willing to potentially get hurt feelings for that paycheck

Wolverine, everything you said should come with a diaper and a handkerchief. Please never equate a little taunting in a football game to AIDS or natural disasters again. It makes you look like a fucking idiot.

So Tate taunted the guy he beat. So fucking what? It is clear from his taunts anyway that the guy had been talking shit all game long and Tate was telling him to keep talking and he'll keep scoring TDs.

These are grown ass men and don't need to be coddled by your sense of insecurity. Don't want to be taunted? Win your assignment and shut the guy up. It's as easy as that. No further analysis needed

You're absolutely right, its only a game. So why do they get to then play by a different set of rules than the rest of us? We are all people regardless of playing in the NFL or not. Its common decency to not shit on your fellow man.

The real question here is, should we encourage taunting or embrace it? Its an easy answer.

Its on the far end of the same spectrum as taunting: civility.

WTF are you talking about? Remind us all when sarcastically waving at another person became a punishable offense in real life.

I guess Tate should have slowed down and let the safety stop him because scoring TDs might hurt the other guy's feelings and we don't want that.

Maybe the Rams safety shouldn't have been talking shit in the first place. I mean that's common decency, right? They should all be polite and hug after the game.

No. It's actually not anywhere near contracting AIDS.

What you're referring to would be much closer to a coherent argument if Tate had been taunting an injured player. The guy wasn't hurt, he was just beaten. Grow a spine and realize these people are adults and should be able to take some trash talk.

Football is entertainment and that play was entertaining as shit!

How far would the players be going without the rules we have today? ...remember the cell phone under the goal post years ago?

What would they be doing today?? ..stabbing the other teams mascot?

Remember ... You get what you tolerate.
