Did you err ?
As do I. A stud DL for a player they were calling the best O-lineman in football after his rookie yearI'm guessing the Colts would want more than just Armstead for Nelson.
Gotta give to get

Except we have another already
I know, a DT is much more the sexier a position than a OG
Slide Armstrong overWe have another 3-Tech already? Who would replace Buckner?

Slide Armstrong over
Tag and extendYou wanna tag Armstead at $18M for one year, and slide him over to 3-Tech?
Tag and extend
Can't see the Niners paying both
Ok, i think you meant sign Armstead long term, then move him to 3-Tech. The first question is, can Armstead REALLY play the 3-Tech?
Last year we read Salleh saying Buckner is the 'perfect' 3-Tech. That is why in the 49er D-line rotation, you rarely see Buckner other than at 3-Tech. I know he had a few snaps outside, but otherwise he's set at 3-Tech for a reason.
I don't recall seeing Armstead playing 3-Tech not once? Armstead was moved around last year too, along with all of them really, but they hardly moved Buckner.
I don't think chasing Quentin Nelson is worth it anyway. Our defense needs to remain 'violent', cause it travels well and functions in all sorts of weather conditions. We can't afford to keep Armstead unfortunately, but we should keep Buckner.
If Armstead vice Buckner, yes they'll want more.
But we don't have much draft capital as is, and i wouldn't start trading away 2021 picks.
Depending on the pick to get Nelson I would.
Ok lets assume the Colts even want Armstead, pick which one from the 2021 draft:
1. Armstead plus 1st
2. Armstead plus 2nd
3. Armstead plus 3rd
4. Armstead plus 4th
5. Armstead plus 5th
6. Armstead plus 6th
7. Armstead plus 7th
8. Armstead plus ?????
A second or a third would be the highest pick I would trade.
Ok so Armstead and a 2021 2nd rounder, for Quentin Nelson.
Next question, if you're the Colts GM, do you take this deal? Say you can sign Armstead for $15M/season.
The Colts GM doesn't have any incentive to move a player like NelsonOh I never said the Colts GM would make it. I mean if you had to trade another late round pick as well I would still probably do it. I don't believe the Colts will trade Nelson more of an arm chair GM what I would be willing to trade.

So, one has to offer up something of equal or greater value
I agree so why was his name even thrown out along with the Armstead discussion?
I'm not sure but someone did so I personally listed what I would be willing to give. The most likely scenario is a comp pick for him.
Thats what i said from the beginning, i wouldn't tag Armstead and just take the comp pick. Don't see any advantage in tagging him?
Not unless you know you have a market for him that is better than the comp pick you'll get probably a 4th maybe a 3rd depending on who they sign as free agents.
Based on his play this season and the position he plays, Armstead will more than likely return a 3rd round comp pick. So let him go without a tag and you get a 3rd rounder in 2021. We already have 'tough decisions' on our own FA's, we're not going to add anyone significant via free agency.
If you tag Armstead and can't get a deal done, then you likely can't re-sign Sanders, Ward, and Sherman. MAYBE you can't even extend Kittle in this situation? I don't see us taking this gamble and tagging Armstead.
Yes, you can ask around the league to gage Armstead's value? But this would all be unofficial and teams don't have to commit to their initial views.
