Looks like we could see a lot of new blood in the P5 conference championship games. Teams that have literally never made it before.

ACC:
Pittsburgh and Virginia have good shots at making it.

BIG TEN:
Michigan and Northwestern both are favorites to make it and both never have.

BIG 12:
West Virginia is looking likely and Iowa State even has a shot.

PAC-12:
Washington State and Utah both are favorites/or very possible to make it.

SEC:
This one is already set and won't have any new teams...but even here Kentucky fell one game short of making it for the first time.

I'm sure many of these teams will fall short but it looks very possible to have a lot of first-time teams in the P5 title games.

With Utah losing to Az St on Saturday really created a log
jam for the Southern Div. 3 Teams are tied for the lead
and 1 team is 1/2 game back.

USC, Utah and Az are all 4-3 in the South. Az St is 3-3.
If Az St wins out, they will hold the tiebreaker over all
the other 3 teams. (They have already beaten USC and Utah
and by winning out they would have beaten Arizona)

USC has the easiest 2-game path to the title with only Cal,
which is no slouch and UCLA. Big game for Az St will be at
Oregon on Nov 17th.

The winner of Wash St-Wash will win the North.

Is new CCG blood better or worse?

Is it better to have conference races to determine CCG participants come down to the final couple of weeks? Or is it better to determine them earlier?

Doesn't have to be new participates, but the later they are determined, the better. Keeps games more interesting.

I've argued ad naseum with @WizardHawk about the "all regular season games matter" flag flown by many.

But, I'm on his side...and with you...when it comes to this. Definitely more interesting to me the later the CCG participants are determined. And I'm all in with Wiz on these type regular season games "mattering".

Not only do these games matter to the two teams playing, they can have an impact on the other potential CCG participants. While not a division game, @NolePride 's example of Az State/Oregon game "matters" to USC, Utah and AZ.

Maybe I should start another thread, so as not to be hijacking
this thread.

But besides the CFP games...what about the other elite bowl
games. There could be some piss-poor match-ups in those
games.

Try to imagine a Peach Bowl with Georgia hosting Boston
College or Syracuse and the 7,000 fans both ACC schools will
bring with them.

Loser of Wash/Wash St in the Rose Bowl vs Northwestern.
Not to be critical but the capacities of Wash St's home stadiumand Northwestern's home stadium, combined, do not equal the Rose
Bowl capacity.

UCF in the Fiesta against Who?

Sugar Bowl will probably be OK, if they match LSU vs OU or WVU.

The Bahama's Bowl might have a better competitive game than some of these Elite games.

I'm guessing that if OSU loses to michigan and they beat NW in the CCG, OSU will wind up in the Rose Bowl. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they have the option to take them since they'd have the same conference record as NW and a better overall record.

At this point, I don't even think the Rose Bowl should take a PAC team as none of them deserve it. Just send KY and LSU to play the game and call it the "What might have been bowl".

By contract they have to take the Pac12 Champ or second best.

In non-semi-final years, the Rose Bowl will host a Big10-Pac12 game.

In non-semi-final years, the Sugar Bowl will host an SEC-Big12 matchup.

Possible. But then Northwestern or some 4-loss team from the SEC
would go to the Fiesta. Phoenix would love that?

True. I guess if that SEC team was LSU or Kentucky, it wouldn't be the worst thing.I'm jut guessing if the Rose had a chance to get OSU back there after 9 years, they'd love it. Plus, OSU vs. Washington State would be awfully entertaining.

Kentucky is a good possibility. They'd bring 50K fans out there.
They have the chance to finish 10-2.

I thought about that before I asked my questions.

My apologies to the OP.

This is almost certain. Loser of Michigan/OSU is headed to the Rose Bowl. Assuming neither Mich or OSU suffer another loss before then.

Just saw this on the CFB reddit:

The 2-7 UCLA Bruins' Path to a Pac-12 Championship
renderTimingPixel.png

The Bruins are still very much alive in the Pac-12 race and it's not inconceivable them to make the Pac-12 Championship. The following would need to take place:

  1. UCLA Wins out (Wins over @ASU, USC, Stanford) - Would give UCLA the tie-breakers over ASU/USC and they already hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arizona

  2. Arizona loses one more game (@Wash St or ASU)

  3. Utah loses both conference games remaining (Oregon and @Colorado)

  4. Colorado loses against Wash St this week
Even if the Pac-12 South teams win all other games not listed above here, the final standings would be:

UCLA 5-4

USC 5-4

ASU/UofA 5-4

Colorado 4-5

Utah 4-5

ASU/UofA 4-5

UCLA wins by virtue of head-to-head tiebreakers over the tied teams

The 5-7 Bruins would be your Pac-12 South Champion and would play the North winner for the Pac-12 Championship in Santa Clara. Win that game and UCLA wins the Pac-12

Almost certain, is not certain. OSU still has to play Mich State.
They lose to them and Michigan they may have issues getting
that bid.

New Orleans wishes with all their might that Tennessee's football program rise from the doldrums and return to the Sugar Bowl. They yearn for the genial, free-spending horde of traveling Volunteers fans. No fan base comes close to our economic impact.

Yeah we definitely can't assume that. It's upsetting that I'm this concerned about a Sparty team that's 113th in the nation in scoring and 98th in passing defense from a YPG perspective, but I definitely am.
