I mean, because I don't believe everything said about the guy that is negative I get lumped into those with an agenda, homer, etc. However, I've been clear the guy has issues, needs help and also think anything from no suspension to a year+ could be justified.
You’re an established Homer and your focus on this issue begins and ends with him being a Brown. If you want to say that your opinion on this matter is not influenced because he’s a Brown I’m calling you a liar right now. The only reason you care about this is because he’s a Brown. The only reason you’re searching for every layer of plausible deniability here is because he’s a Brown. I know it. You know it. The whole board knows it.

agree with the last part but you are only guessing (hoping?) as to what actually happened.
Fair. If the action claimed occurred it’s clear cut sexual assault. The poster I was conversing with was pushing back on that action qualifying and he’s wrong on that point. That’s absolutely a sexual assault.

You mean your world right? I’m sorry bro but this You Hate the Browns line of thinking really doesn’t work. The Browns aren’t even worth hating from my end. They aren’t in the Eagles division and it’s not like they’re the Pats and you have jealousy driven hate for the success. The Browns have been largely irrelevant since Marty Schottenheimer days. The Browns just aren’t worth hating. But because he’s a Brown you’ve taken up his mantle. I get it. That’s what fans do but don’t accuse me of having an agenda. If I have an agenda you can pin on me it’s as the father of a 20 year old girl who is scared to death something awful will happen to her one night at college and the rules of the game leaving her no recourse to get recompense. I have zero fucks to give when it comes to the Browns. Their ceiling in my lifetime has been “also ran”. That’s not worth any level of sports hate. The role the Browns play in the eyes of every NFL fan is one of propped up self esteem. Nearly every fan of every franchise in the NFL when shit gets bad for them can say to themselves… at least we aren’t the fucking Browns.
Sorry, but your comments are often toward Browns fans so at least in this forum you don't like the Browns (or the fans)...or at least want to argue with them. That's cool, BTW. Many here are like that. Just own it.

As for your daughter (and I have one, too) I would hope you tell her if ever in an uncomfortable situation whenever possible to get as far away as she can from the situation. Certainly don't get close enough to be squirted by semen. In addition, tell her not to put herself in that situation with the same person again if she can help it.

The NFL’s code of conduct exists for one reason as one reason only…to protect the brand. That makes the end all be all the court of public opinion. And in the court of public opinion, a settlement is seen by many as an admission of guilt. That’s why you will often see the NFL take action without there being a conviction when players transgress.
Would the NFL rather have this dragged out in public for another 2-3 years or have it end?

I am not the assailant so having a reasonable opinion is OK. Just curious if there is any story that could have been told where you may have said, "now wait a minute....."?

Do you think most in this situation would stay and watch AND remain close enough to be squirted?
A) yes
B) no
I think a person is a shitty human being when a person comes forward and then they go and deflect any level of blame on to a victim. It’s just wrong on every level. There is no text book response for a person to have when they’re being assaulted. Every individual is going to respond differently and they’ll be motivated by many different motivations and stimuli. One thing that can’t be expected is for a person to act rationally in their response or actions. It’s an irrational event. Expecting a rational response is not a fair ask. Case studies show a multitude of responses people have and many of them are irrational.

People freeze.

People question themselves on weather or not they are overreacting in a situation, which causes them to UNDER REACT, especially when a famous, important, affluent individual is involved.

Can't say how you would react to a situation you've never been in.

That goes for both sides.

I'd like to say I'd never settle out of court and I believe this to be true.

Hope I never have to find out, either way.
I’ve posted about this here before but I’m never gonna judge a person who takes the settlement when we are talking a victim of any level of sexual assault. It’s the most under reported and under prosecuted crime in America because there is rarely any tangible evidence that gets created. Even a r*pe kit can be explained away with the claim it was consensual minus any outward signs of violence. The victim will often get put on trial themselves. The go to sexual assault defense is to claim that the victim’s action invited a sexual experience. They’re often portrayed as whores with their whole lives being put on trial. And for what? One of the lowest conviction rates out there among major crimes. Playing the odds, you take that settlement because that’s all society is going to give you. Don’t get me wrong. The tenets of our justice system that leans on due process and the rights of the accused and innocent until proven guilty are sacred and shouldn’t be altered. But you take the good with the bad and the bad can definitely be seen in this issue and what we provide women who are the victims of sexual assault. I wish it were different and there was a better way. But fuck if I know what that better way looks like.

There isn’t a poster here or a team in major sports that I haven’t fucked with or mocked including my own squads and players. There’s just more of you Cleveland guys. I’m sorry I don’t think Mayfield is a top 20 QB. I’m sorry that I call out the Guardians as being a small market club that can’t win big. I have a little something for everybody though. At the same time, I’ve been very vocal about praise for players like Garland and Mobley and have praised the Cavs rebuild. I don’t pick on Cleveland.

They’d rather it not be a thing to begin with. Given these two options they would likely prefer ripping the band aid off. But that doesn’t change the facts on the ground and the rules of how society views a settlement. Once a settlement occurs the NFL can’t do nothing in response. To be fair, they don’t even need a settlement to act.

Can you offer praise when it's due at times? sure. But don't kid yourself. If there's something negative you can sling you'll do it. Nothing wrong with that in a sports forum.

I mean, while they haven't won it all the Tribe has won pretty big. Does the owner hold us back from being a title contender a lot more often than we are? Yep.

I mean, you could at least pretend to be objective when it comes to watson.

But you are dismissing out of hand the possibility the NFL told him to settle (to take this entire ordeal out of the spotlight) in order to get a lesser suspension.

Objective sailed when you run out of fingers AND toes to count up the number of allegations. Not sure to what extent lines were crossed but with that many instances of smoke there’s definitely fire and lines were crossed with females. End of that story for me.

What is a “lesser suspension”? Calvin Ridley got a year for gambling on football. My official call is in this thread. I was saying he gets a year and when he appeals it becomes something more akin to 8-12 games. That’s a pretty substantial suspension.

To me with the Ridley suspension the NFL now has boxed themselves in to where this suspension can’t be less. I was saying one year but I now think it’s very possible they go for more so it doesn’t in the end wind up being less than a year.

Good point. That natural comparison is one many different fans and social media will attach itself to. I can also see the suspensions for Josh Gordon smoking weed being compared to this as well.

And for the record I think the Ridley suspension was ridiculous.

Think about Pete Rose in baseball. These leagues have big interest at stake with gambling. Legal sports gambling is going to drive the fan interest in this next era of sports. We may not agree with the length but I can see where the motivation lies. These leagues can’t allow for the perception that their shit is rigged or compromised in any way, so going forward you’ll see more Ridley like situations in major sports. If a player has a transgression in this realm the league will come down very hard.

I just think a whole year was excessive, but the fact that the players union couldn’t get that one reduced should tell people how this one will end up as well.
