From what im seeing on twitter, they kept running the ball instead of going with the knee....ended up fumbling and ga tech recovered and guess ended up scoring on their final drive

Yeah, both OU and USC have work to do. OU's defense is closer to being ready than USC's and USC's offense is farther along than OU's.

Neither of those should be surprising since Venables expertise is defense and Riley's is offense.

I think that both units are better than they were last year, but not quite where they need to be to contend for an NC.
