Many think Helter Skelter, Revolution and I Want You (She's So Heavy) as the genesis of HM.

i think the "drum revolution" was essential. Not to take away from Starr, Watts, Avory, but to even be considered metal you need a drummer like Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Bill Ward etc

The Who doesn't have definitive bass? Happy Jack, Go to the Mirror, Won't Get Fooled Again...

I don't know if y'all are as ancient as me, but we didn't hear the term "Heavy Metal" until the early 80's with Scorpions, Iron Maiden, UFO, Judas Priest, Accept came out or became popular. You might have heard it applied to Motorhead
I was talking more or less the idea that the Beatles waited much longer to find sounds like the Yardbirds or Kinks but you're correct, later in the White they produced more.
Ya , again you're on with those tracks but I was more focused on a continual presence throughout. The bass is mild in most of their songs, not overpowering, you might agree, but also, their use wasn't critical to the song they cut either. They had it but just didn't place emphasis on it's dominating sound, I don't think so, maybe you do?

I remember listening to the first broadcasts of FM radio and the word that wa used was "progressive ". I think about 71 right about Les Zepp's ZOFO, I heard the term heavy. With already established sounds from Sabbath Mountain, Iron Butterfly and such, it became apparent this new sound needed it's own terminology. IDK who coined it, it's not like a Roger Freed moment but the evolution took root in about 65 and broke loose in 67. Everyone needed a HI FI stero with a good turntable it was similar to cell phones now, The King Biscuit flower hour was a popular fix for this new wave, I listened to a guy named Ed Shockey and WIOQ 102 in Philly. Doctor Dimento and such. Hearing Vanilla Fudge and the Doors at late night had a sexual fantasy secret of it's own for music.

Same with me. I grew up with WGRQ, Slick Tom Tibiri and Cyndy Chan, the Zeppelin Fan. We also got CFNY from Toronto, the station glorified by Rush in The Spirit of Radio. I remember King Biscuit. We also had the Sunday Night Concerts, many of them were bootlegs the DJs made. We all had the huge component stereos with receiver, turntable, equalizer and dual cassette deck. We would coordinate album purchased and trade them off to make a tape. "You buy the new Van Halen, I'll get the new Stones, he will get the new AC/DC and swap them".

Now I have all the songs in the world in my shirt pocket. If my 1981 self could see that he would have messed himself. Not sure if the old days were better...

After replying to fknhippie I began to think, what is Heavy Metal is it a rudimentary power from bass or is it a zealous stratosphere of sound from a guitar.
Is Geezer Butler or Toni Iomi the responsible component?
By one or 2 metal hits on the chart, does that establish you as a full metal band?, Ie Foghat.
Is it Marshall or Peavy that makes Metal?

looking back, I have to wonder why The Stones and Beatles never travelled that road, to dip their toes into a sound that was becoming so infatuating to youth,

Is the WHO a metal band?, certainly fielding great individual players,. They lacked that definitive bass in most of their hits but they certainly were loud and aggressive

It's just some things to think about when considering a Metal band that's all.

Entwistle is generally considered to be the best bass player in rock history, but the Who weren't metal and neither was Zep or AC/DC. Big loud power chords do not a metal band make. Black Sabbath were the real game changers and archetype for what became known as heavy metal imo.

Back in the day, there was a radio show called Firesign Theater. A mixture of comedy and some kick ass music. One night, my buddy and I were in his room bonging hash listening to the show and the host was whispering very faintly to turn up the volume as far as we could to here some mysterious sound he was describing. We had the volume cranked with our ears next to the speaker then he yells THEY'RE SMOKING POT IN HERE!

That fucker got us good lol.

Disagree on Entwistle but agree that Zeppelin and AC/DC are not metal. 0ne of the overlooked early "metal" bands is Uriah Heep. Those guys could jam.

I'd also throw in Noel Redding and Jack Bruce.
