NJ Devils: Sweden West
First, almost everything I'm going to say is speculation based off the small hints and leaks we all have read over the past 6 months.
Here are my thoughts:
I believe that Ilya hasn't played well at all this season. Sure, he had some points, but other than some decent PP opportunities and the two goals, he's been a total nonfactor in all the games. I also acknowledge that he's responsible for half our wins. Let's be honest though, he wasn't playing well and anyone who says he was is essentially deluding themselves or is blinded by the smooth skating.
JMAC obviously wasn't pleased that he wasn't meshing with Parise and Zajac who obviously work much better off a cycle. That's fine, but Kovy has basically been demoted and instead of working harder, etc he disappeared in a game where almost everyone had a solid effort (Montreal).
Now, everyone on here acknowledges that regular season success with this team hasn't amounted to anything in recent history. Fine, then the Devils needs to regroup as a team and all get on the same page.
Did it take a benching in October to wake Ilya up? Maybe. Is it possible that after making he playoffs once in Atlanta he assumed that the Devils were just so good that they were guaranteed to make it this year, and they weren't going to need to fight for it?
Stop looking at the contract and look at the play. Maybe this is JMACs way of letting this team know that it's his ship, and if you want to play, you better fight every night.
Seriously, Pelley looked like his nose was torn off when he returned in a 5-0 game. That's a player leading by example, and he makes the least money in the room.
I also believe that a motivated Ilya is just as good as Parise. So hopefully that's the end result of this.
There's no way that MacLean should be fired over this loss. Ilya playing wouldn't have made any difference.
I also wonder if the locker room was upset with Ilya again for some of the 2 minute PP shenanigans.
Finally, all this could be total BS because he could have simply had something like a family emergency that he didn't want getting out to the public (I doubt it, but it could have been.)
