well, Norman escalated the secondary

we could do something similar on the DL

YOu dont think $20 million is enough to bring in a difference maker?? We NEED to not resign Davis?? UNless you want anothe Haynesworth, I think $20 million is more than enough to add a difference maker IF we need to do it through FA.

Normans cap number was $8 million.

i love what Davis has done ... especially considering he is homwgrown

but i think its silly to think this was not his last year in the league.

Dude.. he is 32, has NOT had an injury history. And aside from last year has been highly productive. On what planet would he NOT be playing next year?? OUr offense works partly because we do have so many options in the passing game. Seriously cant fathom why you and GK would want to cut our offensive strength in half to save a few million in cap space. Right now we got two WRs who have done dick nada in Ross and Grant. So we keep Davis, JAckson, Garcon and we still have a roster spot to have Doctson on roster and another WR if needed.... and still have $20 million for the draft and FA... and this is saying we DO actually over pay Davis, Jackson and Garcon... which i dont think happens.

But yes lets not resign productive players to save a few million in cap space.

if Davis was getting starter minutes ... he would have the same issues the other TE around the league are having.

That position takes a beating.

As for the offense ... they are HISTORICALLY kicking ass.

so yeah ... they could use some money on that side of the ball to invest on the defense which is suck ass.

If the Skins make the playoffs this year, and maybe even win a game, Dan and Scot might want to start thinking about offering Jay an extension.

I think that would go a long way in getting Kirk's signature on something long term.

My guess is Davis gets resigned, his cap number is around $3.5 million..... The tight wads of the board scream we over paid him not even considering that the other three TE's we currently have on roster ALL have injury histories.

If we are going to build the defense, it should NOT be by spending big money on free agents. We need to DRAFT defensive players that have a shot at being here for a while. Our offense works and works well.. so its worth paying to keep them together.

Bingo. As myself & others have mentioned in this era just can't build this perfect type of team where you have lots of elite players on both sides of the ball. You have to make a decision in terms of where you want the bulk of your talent to reside. That philosophy is working great for Dallas now and has worked in the past for teams like Denver, Seattle & NO (in their title season).

Again - I think that Norman was the exception due to unique circumstances. I don't think that the Redskins will be looking for another big $$ FA unless something else very unique occurs. I agree that the team builds the D primarily through the draft w/ the intention that the D will be adequate but not really great.

While we can debate forever how best to use next years cap money, it is instructive to remember what has been said about the key piece by those charged with making those decisions. Dealing with this one contract sets the stage upon which all other transactions will be based. It is also important to remember that there were sacrifices made on the offensive side of the ball in order to build a top notch defense in SM previous stint at Seattle. In that instance WR became the sacrificial point. Our team is, in relative terms, extremely wealthy at the position. Here are SM's words in relation to settling that key position. (Link provided)

"The way I look at it is I want Kirk in a long-term deal, no doubt about it, but also I'm not gonna put our franchise in a situation where we're gonna lose three or four younger guys that I think are gonna be good football players for one guy," McCloughan told Sirius/XM Radio. "I won't do it. You know, that's just how it is."

"Hopefully," McCloughan said, "He's our quarterback for a long time."

"The quarterback position's very, very important, but you know what, so is every other position," McCloughan said. "We need football players. We need multiple football players, not one."

If somehow SM let's Cousins walk over the next few years then he risks all good will that he has built to date & a possible fan revolt. No way in hell does this happen. McCloughan is only making those statements as part of the posturing that goes on in negotiations.

In this case the fate of this team does revolve around Cousins. Take him out of the equation & they suffer greatly. What good is having top notch receivers if you have question marks at the QB position. What available QB could run this team as well as Cousins? Get real.

BTW - that article was written in July - well before we all saw what Cousins is capable of doing with this team.

Cousins isn't going anywhere. Period. End of discussion. He's going to get a multiyear contract, because that's what the market says he deserves. He will be overpaid, but not as overpaid as, say, Albert Haynesworth, Deion Sanders, or any of the other crappy players signed by the redskins over the years.

And he isn't going to be overpaid to the tune of "not being able to fill other needs." It's not in his best interest to be paid so much that many of his weapons (say, Jackson, Garcon, AND Davis) all have to go to different teams.

It'll all work out.

At this point I don't believe that there is any doubt that a new contract will be hammered out. The questions will be for what amount and how does it affect the team structure going forward. Whether said in July or a season ago has no bearing on the structure SM has built since his arrival. It makes all the sense in the world to have a plan and stick with it. I don't believe that it is posturing, but an honest retelling of that plan. The real question is whether or not Kirk is willing to sign a lucrative contract that is also a bit less than what the market dictates. In other words...is he willing to sacrifice a few less dollars in order to keep the weapons that he has and build a stronger defense (Super Bowl caliber team) I also believe that the primary reason why they FT'ed him this year was simply because the answer to that question from the Cousins camp was .....NO!

Cousins certainly doesn't want to leave the Redskins hurting money wise to the pt where they can't address other positions. Therefore - he may sacrifice a few dollars. However - it won't be that many & he will still get a very big contract. This situation is completely different than where it was last offseason. Bottom line - this is the price of having an elite QB and doing business in the NFL in this era.

I want Davis back at around 3 -4 mil...guarantee both years.

I want DJ back at about 7-8 mil.

I want PG back at 5_6 mil.

I am willing to let all walk. I really want Ty back but I think he will go elsewhere.

Bingo. It's just typical negotiation tactics. SM would be a fool to come out and say "Kirk is the man and I'm just going to hand him a blanc check."

At the same time Scott knows now Big Cuz is the truth and letting someone who exhibits traits like this is even more foolhardy:

If we let all them go. Our offense will suffer and our defense isn't ready to compensate

Going into the season with grant , crowder Harris. Malcolm docston and Ross probably makes KC a geno smith

Paul has been on IR for 2 seasons carrier just came off and reed isnt going into an iron man competition

So keeping those guys if you can. Is a must and cutting corners to save a buck won't cut it
