Freeman? Not sure shortened seasons should count.

Before that, Gibson?

Edit: Just looked up these two (only these two), and I was shocked. Gibson actually DESERVED that MVP. TIL

I looked it up...there were 2 that did this...one 'player' and one 'pitcher'

Eck got his as a reliever. They typically have lower WARs…
Indeed, which is how he became an answer to this trivia question. Some good trivia, already passed it along to my dad.

Turns out only 2 have done so ever, Eck and the other guy. Even the 2020 MVPs had 3.0 and 3.3 WAR

Good link here (includes the MVP-like awards issued before 1931)

Walter Johnson LOL

If it isn’t Freeman (it isn’t, I looked it up), I am not sure who the “player” could be. 2 WAR is such a low bar. It has to go back a ways before WAR even existed and they only looked at Avg, HRs and RBIs. My MVP knowledge of those days is lacking.

That feels like a Harold Baines stat, but I'm virtually certain that he never won the MVP.

Wait, is it Zoilo Versailles in 1965 for the Twins?

I looked it up. I never would have gotten the other guy. I figured there might be someone a long time ago with a low WAR so that's why I made the question the "last" player to do it.

The other guy had a pretty mediocre year, but he was 39 so it was kind of a lifetime achievement award. Your boy got screwed out of what should have been his 4th

I was actually talking about Roger Peckinpaugh from 1925. I totally missed Stargell because he tied for the award with Hernandez. It's weird, Stargell's season long stats don't seem to make him an MVP but maybe he sensed that because he went full on HAM in the postseason that year. He won NLCS and WS MVP.
