They would have been in time out during his warmup. When the ballgame officially resumed, there would have been another pitcher of record. So, no, he didn't throw the shortest number if pitches.
He was announced, therefore he had entered the game, but never threw a pitch.

Gibson is one of them.

Just one remaining. Lower-tier HOFer.
On a side note, I believe if the people voting for Cy Young in the 70's looked at it the way the voters of today do he would have had many more top 10 Cy finishes and maybe even won a couple. So he may have been on a higher tier (depending on how many tiers there are). But back then the W-L stat was weighted much heavier.

A lot of what I call “lower tier” HOFers, when compared to today’s ”beasts”, have elite numbers. The era of the SP is on its death bed. It has been sick for about 30 or 40 years, but it is finally in its last stages now.

Yeah no doubt. There's a big difference in degree of difficulty for starters that were expected to pace themselves over 9 innings and current starters who just throw everything at their opponents for 110 pitches (if that), then leave it up to the bullpen.

The Giants and Rays are completely abandoning the concept of a rotation all together. The Giants only have 2 SP as it is, and do 3 Wholestaff games per rotation. That’s unprecedented.

I am not a fan of this change, but I see the logic of it and acknowledge that my dislike of it comes entirely from my romantic love of the game and not from some argument that it doesnt offer a competitive advantage.

So did the other three I mentioned. I guess it was just a poor question to begin with as the others actually faced a batter.
Who are your other examples? When I read about Yount’s situation, my research says he is the only one. I don’t really trust that since I have found inaccurate statements in the past about baseball happenings (such as Ichiro being referenced as the only player in MLB history to have his first name on his real, non special event game worn jersey -- Vida Blue went with “Vida” for a few years in the early ‘80s)

This might be a new trivia answer....Urias on the Red Sox last Thursday, his last swing he hit a grand slam. The next time he swung the bat, today....he hit another one. I doubt any player before has ever hit two grand slams on consecutive SWINGS of the bat

Who are your other examples?

  • 1970, Angel's vs. Brewers.
  • 2003, Orioles vs. Tigers
  • 2009, Rockies vs. Nationals

Garrett for the Angels, Ryan for the Orioles, and Embree for the Rockies. Garrett usually doesn't come up because his was before pitch count was recorded.

I was on youtube looking for Ryan's and Embree's games when I found this video, which puts Garrett's feat into question...

I think you may have misunderstood my question…

Yount never threw a pitch in his entire MLB career. He blew out his arm warming up for his MLB debut.

Morris was already mentioned.
OK to further weaponize that excellent question,

Who was the last Hall of Famer to throw a no hitter (and what year)?
