Montel Owens renegotiated the final year of his contract two days before X-mas. He was due to make 1.525 million, in total, for the 2014/2015 league year. Previous contract; 1,250,000.00 in base (now vet minimum 855,000), signing bonus 125k (now 0), roster bonus 100k (now 100k), can earn up to 250k in incentives, workout bonus 50k (now 50k), and can earn 12,500 for every game he plays......

Old contract;..............................new
base................ 1,250,000........ 855,000

signing bonus.......125,000......... o

roster bonus.........100,000.........100,000

workout bonus........50,000..........50,000.

games played..........0...... up to..175,000 (12,500 per game played)

Games Played incentives should have been written as

12,500.00 per game, earning a max of 200,000.00 playing all 16 games...
NOT 175,000.00 (that would be 14 games played)

IMO just another classic example of why this team is absolutely clueless.

Does anyone think Owens was going to get anything other than the vet minimum someplace else? On what basis given his fantastic 2013 season would any other team offer more?

You could have cut him and taken a $125k dead money hit, and unless I am missing a rule regarding resigning a player you cut, could have resigned him at the vet min $855k plus the allowable $65k signing bonus and then claimed the MLS deduction and his cap hit is $640k. Add back the dead $ and its $765k. Savings of $760k over current contract.

It is simply beyond my comprehension the stupidity of this team. It's not like Montell fucking Owens would be difficult to replace on the roster. Once again we way overpay for a nothing player and just piss valuable cap space away. It's unreal.

Good post. Not sure why they did not unless they are cutting LeShoure for sure. Not hard to find number 4 RBs that play special teams. Maybe we get lucky and he pans out and contributes on offense.

Some people... very good special teamer, good reserve RB who can also line up at FB. In short he's a perfect back-up RB because he adds value by playing a key role on special teams and also can play FB.

We can't field a team of league-minimum salary players, some guys are worth more than the very least amount we are allowed to pay them... besides, the max-contract guys are the problem in that regard anyhow, not some guy chewing up an extra $300k over league minimum salary...

Who is Montel Owens?

A thirty year old former UDFA Jag scrub who makes no difference. (50 yards of offense per season on average. Several kick returns as an up man on short kicks.)
