I keep reading how this team is going to tank or that team is going to tank. The problem with that is no team has played 60-70 games yet. Most the time the reason a team Can tank is poor play and no energy left to put up a fight. No One is tired and players want to play. Cant see any team tanking this year.

there's less of an incentive to tank under the new lottery rules.
before the last place team had somewhere close to 50% chance of retaining the #1 pick
now it's only 25%.

in this draft, there are 3 or 4 guys who are can't miss impact guys, and the group behind them isn't too shabby either.
Seth Jones probably goes #1, but that's hardly a lock. if you miss on him, you still have MacKinnon / Druin / Nichushkin / Barkov to pick from

As puck said, only 25% chance you'll get the top pick by finishing last. Also, I think the last thing you want to instill in your team is a losing culture, play to win the game and see how things shake out at the end of the season.

/Besides, the Oil will probably win the lottery again anyway.

I agree and that's why I don't understand all this talk about tanking. They are all pretty close and if you miss on this draft you damn well better look at your scouting dept. It's not like there's a Gretz or Crosby coming out and no one worth a shit behind them it's a strong draft.

Also call me old fashion but there is no integrity in a team that pays it's fans back that pay damn good money to attend games to watch them tank.

Just my two cent's.

True, to me it's just not right. I coached little league BB for many years and always taught our players you never quit and you play it out all the time. I would expect millionaire players to do it without being asked.

I think the misconception is on what "tanking" means. I firmly believe that it happens in every sport, but not by players. Players always try hard for the most part, their jobs depend on it. Management, however, can set them up to have a better shot at losing. By sitting players, tinkering with systems, altering lineups, etc., management can have a big impact on the outcome of a game.

Oh absolutely, I didn't mean to make it sound like a players only thing the coach and GM could do it too. It's not easy to do because most of the time it's pretty easy to spot.

Oh

They are not tanking on purpose for a draft pick.

Theyare tanking because they forgot how to win.

Precisely.

I look back at my minor hockey career and my PIMs were directly correlated with the losing percentage of my team. Seems young Kenny got a little pissed when his team was losing. I couldn't, and still can't, stand people who don't play to win.

As my father always told me, if you keep score, you play to win. No exceptions.

Recent tankers include the Avalanche and Panthers. Look where it's gotten them.

I could potentially see teams tanking for a higher conditional draft pick from the recent trading deadline. Tanking doesn't necessarily mean running out of steam, or trying for the worst record.
