COMPLETELY off topic...

As many of you know, I play quite a bit of poker. Well, I play in a WSOP house feeder league that sends about 10 players to different events each year at the WSOP. Last year, I played in one of the 1K events.

This year, we sent two players to the main event, which is going on right now, and the pay bubble just burst a few mins ago. One of our players is still alive, and I get approx 1.5% of his total winnings. He has already earned about 19K (my share is currently about $150), and it only gets better from here.

If he wins the whole thing, I think the payout will be about 6M, which will pay me approx 90K.

1.5% of $19K = $285

I divided by 2 an extra time... (I actually get approx 1/30 of 1/2, or 1/60)

Even better :)

With those math skills how did you ever get good at poker?

He busted a little after the bubble, but collected almost 22K!! Not 8M (I looked up the payout), but certainly not bad...

So, based on practise, he plays, he wins, his co-clubbers win a little?

Doesn't that pass thru? Do WE all get a % of your winnings?

{just kidding}

You REALLY want 1% of my winnings? The postage would cost more than the value of the check...

Again, math skills.

1/60th of $250 (me being conservative) is ... $4.16 or so. More than postage. (and there's less of us, so the % should be higher, no?)

There's been buzz that Bochy has jerked around Brandon Belt, and that his production has really suffered as a result. So I looked at how Belt performs in games when he's played in the previous game.

Stats when he's played in the previous game (not necessarily a start).

Code:
PA BA OBP SLG OPS
181 0.275 0.376 0.451 0.827

He had one bad stretch in mid through late May when he hit .225 with a .675 OPS, other than that he's been pretty good in consecutive games played. Add it all together and his "consecutive-games" line is marginally better than his overall line. Surprisingly, 80% of Belts plate appearances have come when he has played in the game previously. Really, can't seem to find any objective evidence that he's been jerked around.

Had to step in after I accidentally flipped the radio to KNBR and heard Fitz on an arrogant rant about it.

Belt's .778 OPS would be 5th among qualified NL 1Bs (Belt does not qualify because he does not have enough AB's). And clearly, he is improving. I no longer worry about Belt - he is no longer a hole in the lineup and he is a reliable fielder, unlike his predecessor, on both counts.

2012 Regular Season MLB Baseball Batting Statistics - NL First Basemen - Major League Baseball - ESPN

Holy shit! Has the offense power at 1B been declining that rapidly? Maybe it's due to the "no roids" (and much more aggressive testing) ...

Edit: YES, it has! After 2009, there's been a *massive* drop-off in power-hitting 1B in the NL. The "average" (mid-point) was well above an OPS of .800, and now it's dropped to .750 or below.

Also, if you add in the number of plate appearances for Belt to show up (225 PAs, to compare him against everybody in his situation as well) he's 7 out of 14 (instead of slotting in 5th out of 7 - much less impressive than I originally thought when hearing "would be 5th among qualified NL").
