This discussion is one of the reasons baseball is so unpredictably fun. Before the season many of us grumbled that the Melky trade was a poor one, that we could've gotten more for Chez, that Melky's lifetime stats weren't good and his breakout in KC was a fluke. Well now Melky is providing what we thought was a lock to get from Belt, and then some.

Add in Pagan being better than expected so far, and the defense calming down to where it should be, and Lincecum at least getting back to being a decent pitcher (doesn't need to be an ace) and you have a pretty good team. Even with the batting holes at 1B and SS.

Lincecum who knows...sometimes good pitchers have off years. Maybe this is Tim's off year and 2013 (his contract year) he takes the lessons of 2012 and becomes a stud again. I hope he figures it out sooner....

I thought of Texas, but check the stats I doubt you can say that about the Yankees or Red Sox. And if you can my point stands...with our pitching we can live with a hole or two in the lineup. Working for the Dodgers just fine. Also, you have a call from the 2010 Giants.

I think YOU should check the stats! Preferably before you make blanket statements.

Throw out teams spending north of $150MM on payroll -- with that kind of scratch they certainly OUGHT to be able to find league average starters at every position. That leaves, by your count, 2/26 teams (TEX, STL) who do this without spending loads of cash.

I think in general, MSG point stands -- it's rare to find 8 league average wOBA guys on the same team. What's more befuddling is that PHI and LAA don't do it even with the payroll.

Oh....I had to dispute the point when it was made with such conviction, and yet was so obviously wrong.

So, I've been largely out of touch for a week, and in that week the the blogsphere has gone from "Belt must play everyday - screw bochy" to "Belt is an asshole - he's another Todd Linden".

It has been a pretty tough week for Belt.

But if you're saying the hate is overdone maybe we don't really have a hole at 1B?

Yes, you had to. An obvious compulsion.

What's with all the hole talk? I'm not that concerned about them, and I think Belt will be fine with a couple hundred more AB.

I guess I misunderstood your posts and comments about the wOBA deficits at some positions. I hope you're right that Belt rounds into a decent hitter, then we really do have nothing to really worry about in the lineup.

Love the simple caveman approach to it all. Doesn't seem like an overthinker.
See Ball. Swing Stick. Hit ball very hard.

Perfect complement to the Oft over self-absorbed Zenmaster Zito?

Melky is not the same player now (and last year) that he was prior.

I think it is safe to ignore his career numbers pre-KC.

At least that is the response I am going with regarding those numbers.

The doppelgangers are great! Thanks, gp. I'm sure I can't rep you.

EDIT: Seacrest and Edlefsen FTW!

I am of the opinion that it's geographic...anytime he's west of the Mississippi, he's the Melkman....east of the Great River, he sucks bawls.

He HAD to love 40,000 people last night chanting "Mel-key! Mel-key."
