The Washington Redskins conducted the first day of their three-day minicamp on Tuesday. Some observations:

--DeSean Jackson was back and Kirk Cousins took the opportunity to throw him a long touchdown pass early. Jackson was guarded by Quinton Dunbar on the play, though it's hard to imagine any of the team's cornerbacks could have matched Jackson's speed.

--There was very little of Josh Norman vs. DeSean Jackson. Norman mostly covered other players, including doing a little dance at the line before running with Pierre Garcon. Norman had a highlight play of his own, reaching in to strip the ball from a sliding Ryan Grant in the end zone - Grant seemed certain he had a touchdown.

--Jordan Reed remained out with an ankle injury, and Josh Doctson was out with an Achilles injury. Coach Jay Gruden said he wasn't concerned with either injury.

--Officials were on hand for the practice, and after they called a false start early on, the defense celebrated.

--Matt Jones took a couple hard "hits" on Tuesday, even though players weren't allowed to be fully tackled. Will Compton and DeAngelo Hall both made their pads thump against Jones, instead of the usual two-hand touch. During last year's camp, there were whispered complaints from veterans that Jones had been too physical, but he seems to be playing by the rules this time around.

--Ricky Jean Francois had one of his best practices, manhandling the linemen who were in his path. At one point he got leverage on Kory Lichtensteiger and drew a holding penalty.

--Bashaud Breeland had a running downfield interception on Rashad Ross, but the day's best pick, by far, belonged to undrafted rookie Lloyd Carrington, who snagged a pass in the end zone by extending his right arm, then cradling the ball one-handed as he fell to the ground.

--Two names to watch based purely on playing time: Cornerback Dashaun Phillips and running back Robert Kelley.

--After Chris Baker tipped a pass and yelled "You like that!" back at Cousins, linebacker Will Compton yelled, "I love football!", contributing to the energy level at the workout.

--There was a small dust-up between two undrafted players, but no punches were thrown.

--Jay Gruden was attentive during the special teams period, at one point yelling encouragement to kicker Dustin Hopkins. It seems the team is putting a bigger emphasis on the unit this year.

--The offense twice ran a red-zone situation with the first team. The first time, Cousins was blitzed on third-and-goal, with Matt Jones left to pick up two defenders. The second time, Cousins completed a 15-yard pass to Jamison Crowder to enter the red zone, but Chris Baker tipped a third-down pass.

Sounds like SM is adding lots of competition at multiple positions. We couldn't ask for more.
