I thought it was one of the rare win win for both sides.

As an Angel fan I'm glad he's locked up and I'm also glad that when the contract is up we'll still have a chance to sign/extend him to a mega 10 year deal when he's still in his prime years.

I don't understand why there isn't outrage over this contract. People exploded when the Tigers signed Miggy.

The way I see it, the Angels had control over Trout for the next four years. He was slated to make $1MM this year and then 3 years of arbitration. The largest arbitration contract to date is $15M. For the sake of argument lets assume that Trout would have gotten $20MM per year. Therefore the breakdown of the new contract would look like this:

2014: $1,000,000
2015: $20,000,000
2016: $20,000,000
2017: $20,000,000
2018: $41,000,000
2019: $42,000,000

The new contract only gives the Angels two more years of guaranteed Trout. I know they wanted a longer contract and Trout refused but they had all the leverage in this situation.

I believe with the new deal he's not a free agent until after the 2020 season, so I think you're a year off with the timeline...that would give the Angels 3 years of Trout after what would've been his original free agency.

With that (assuming the arbitration years would've gotten him $20M), it might look like:

2014 - $ 1,000,000
2015 - $ 20,000,000
2016 - $ 20,000,000
2017 - $ 20,000,000
2018 - $ 28,000,000
2019 - $ 28,000,000
2020 - $ 28,000,000

By golly, I think you might be right. Why would he still take $1M in '14? Your math makes more sense.

Why the push for teams to extend guys who aren't looking at Free Agency? Both the Trout and Miggy deals seem unnecessary.

You extend them now so they don't taste the temptation of Free Agency...sound business practice. Why give the player some sort of ammunition/grievance over "not being taken care of" when two years are left on a deal. If you wait till the last year of the contract, they will just test FA.

So this deal is kind of like an insurance deal for Trout. He gets a decent sized pot of gold but forgoes the opportunity to hit it even bigger after 4 more years. His young age allows him to do this and he will be set up for his mega-deal while still under 30 years old. Seems like a fair deal.

Deal of the Century: Angels delay Mike Trout's free agency with six-year extension | The Strike Zone - SI.com

The deal will cover Trout’s three arbitration years and delay his free agency by three years, expiring just after Trout’s 29th birthday at the end of the 2020 season.

Thanks for setting the record straight. I edited my post after realizing you were correct.

That "taste" was still years down the road for Trout. His 1mil for this season is actually an overpayment for a player with his expierience. (No franchise wants to go thru arbitration, but this deal didn't buy many FA years from MT.)

No worries, honest mistake.

Like you said, it's a fair deal and right now looks like it will be good for both sides, given present day salaries. It might also prevent any future animosity, given that Trout might now feel that the team took care of him (in a big way) at an early age, which may lead him to want to stay with the Angels when he eventually does hit free agency (although he'd still get paid big time if he's still good/healthy by then).

I think it was the word extension that confused me. I often get stuck on those big words.

The money being spent on baseball players is absolutely NUTS.

Actually, the Trout deal is pretty realistic. He gets a $5MM signing bonus and $1MM salary this year. Next year his salary rises to $5.25MM. It would have been his first year eligible for arbitration and would have made $10-12MM. In '16-'17, he will earn an average of $17.5MM, which is realistic and probably a little below what he would have made assuming his performance doesn't drop off. The last 3 years he will earn $33.25MM. Those are the years he would have been a FA and his value would have been right around there for a player in his prime.
Overall, the Angels got a slight discount in overall price and Trout got the security (and some upfront dough) that he will have enough money for the rest of his life if disaster strikes.

Teams are liking the ol Cleveland 90's system, just a hell of alot more money and a bigger mistake if you pick the wrong players

Cano's contract is still going to be bad, not as bad as Hamilton.....Pujols just can't be bad the entire contract. Miggy's could go either way after seeing Pujols...Signing Trout at that age should be the best value for a large contract ever because it doesn't involve a player after 32 years old.

He's a great player but so was Ryan Howard once upon a time.

Lots of things can go wrong but if they don't he has a chance to be an all time great.
