Is this the guy Saban fired for that putrid performance??
No, this was that guys (who got the maryland HC job) assistant. He got overlooked for the OC job with Enos already being on staff. Is this the guy Saban fired for that putrid performance??
No we didn't. We lost staff, and word is Pep is gone. We went out and hired a up and coming OC from a power program, good recruiter, as someone who can help our stagnant offense. That is entirely different than what MSU did; which is basically just change the title next to everyone on staff's name. You did the same thing pretty much, only you apparently didn't think anyone in your own program was worth a shit to promote. Big difference in hiring an actual OC and promoting someone into the position.
Well, one had deep ties to OSU. Dad played there. Grew up there. So on. Coached with Day at another school already. That one makes sense. So, just checking in here: What's up with all the Michigan coaches jumping over to Ohio State?

You know he wasn't going to retire and that michigan had offered him a 2 year deal with a definite pay raise. Don't play coy. He was a major recruiter for them and was responsible for developing likely the best position group michigan has had since Harbaugh got there.Well, one had deep ties to OSU. Dad played there. Losing Mattison was a head scratcher; honestly for both programs. OSU hired a 70 year old to co-defensive coordinator. A 70 year old who's defenses they've demolished in the last 8 years at Michigan. His contract was up at Michigan and word was that he was going to retire or get a mild bump in pay for a 1-2 year contract. Other than OSU fans laughing about stealing our coach, I can't see the long term benefits for them.
Ok. But there was a reason he didn’t stay on as DC when Harbaugh got here....You know he wasn't going to retire and that michigan had offered him a 2 year deal with a definite pay raise. There's also a reason why you've put 5 DL into the NFL since 2016, with another 2 this year. There's also a reason you were able to get guys like Rashaan Gary and Aubrey Soloman to come to michigan as elite 5* DL prospects. That reason is now in Columbus.Ok. But there was a reason he didn’t stay on as DC when Harbaugh got here....

Georgia seems to be doin well.remind me, how many former saban assistants have gone on to continued successes after leaving Tuscaloosa, again?
It's not a coincidence that your defensive recruiting before Mattison got there was absolute trash (no wonder you didn't produce many NFL prospects back then when he was DC), but then once he started recruiting, you started bringing in studs, and then once his guys got in there your defense improved. He was working with crap as a DC but it was right when Harbaugh got there that his recruits were starting to get regular playing time. Again, not a coincidence. There's no way to prove this argument either way. It's a chicken or the egg argument. I'd argue our defensive successes are more related to Don Brown than Mattison; even at the position Mattison coaches. In the 4 years that Mattison was our DC, he produced two NFL draft picks at the position; none going higher than the 3rd round. In the four years since Mattison was our DC, demoted to DL, we've produce 6 NFL draft picks from the D-line.
Could it be possible that Mattison, when given a smaller scope of duties, was the reason for that? I don't know. I can't know. But given what Don Brown has done at all positions, not just the D-line, with our defense and the player development across the line, I'd put it more on him.
Also to note, in the last few years Mattison became less active on the recruiting trail for us as he's gotten older. See the 247 recruiter rankings. In the last few years Mattison has taken a huge step down. That job has gone to some of the younger guys Harbaugh brought in. Washington was a bigger loss in this area than Mattison was. He used to be a lot more important; but again, he's 70. He's really old. For guys like Gary, Chris Partridge was the guy landing those players; not Mattison.
I don't know man. Yeah, I'm bitter about OSU stealing our coach. But it's just weird. I can easily justify the Washington move. I can't quite figure out the Mattison move. I think OSU could have done much better than that.
Again, it's so hard to know exactly who was responsible for what. Our everything was trash under RR. Hoke recruited defense really well, being a DL coach himself. Mattison probably is really good at identifying DL talent; but I have to imagine so are probably a billion other guys OSU could have hired under the age of 50.It's not a coincidence that your defensive recruiting before Mattison got there was absolute trash (no wonder you didn't produce many NFL prospects back then when he was DC), but then once he started recruiting, you started bringing in studs, and then once his guys got in there your defense improved. Again, in 4 years as DC Mattison sent two lineman to the NFL. In the first 4 years of Brown, we've sent 6. So if you're arguing that Mattison was great at pulling in recruits, you have to then say he was terrible at developing them (at least as a defensive coordinator). So you think it was all just a huge coincidence that your defensive recruiting was trash until Mattison got there and then once he got there it improved dramatically, but right it had nothing to do with him.
This was a huge pickup for OSU. Having two veteran coaches like him and Larry Johnson on our defense is huge for not only recruiting, but also for developing our younger defensive coaches. If there are a billion other guys under 50 that are just as good at identifying DL talent, michigan wouldn't have offered him a 2 year extension right before we took him.
No I don't. Yet again, he was working with crap-level talent. Over a 3 year period, you guys brought in eight 4* defensive recruits right before he got there. Then he improved your talent through recruiting and continued coaching them, and voila. NFL talent.Again, in 4 years as DC Mattison sent two lineman to the NFL. I'm still sticking with the opinion that OSU could have done a hell of a lot better. Put it this way, if Mattison left for any other school or retired my opinion would have been, "great, a spot for Harbaugh to hire a younger coordinator". It really only bugs Michigan fans because he left for OSU not because of the talent of the coach we're losing.
He was there for four years as DC. That's a full recruiting cycle. 2 NFL prospects, one he didn't even recruit that came from RR.No I don't. Yet again, he was working with crap-level talent. We'll see what happens this year. The best unit on michigan's team recently has been the DL. If they take a dip while OSU improves, I guess we'll have our answer.
Yeah, I was excited. A great guy to keep on coaching your defensive line. To demote a guy like that and keep him was a great move. But that's not what OSU is doing. They hired him to be co-defensive coordinator. He was also in his mid-60's at the time. It's now 5 years later.Am I the only one who remembers how pumped MnB was when Harbaugh retained Mattison when Harbaugh was first hired?
Let's lay this out easier for you.He was there for four years as DC. That's a full recruiting cycle. 2 NFL prospects, one he didn't even recruit that came from RR.
