Well according to all “experts” there weren’t any college hitters left so that kind of sucks but hopefully these kids work out.

Also want to say this is the first draft I’ve watched and they have done a really good job of making it feel big, but wish they’d allow trades and quit the slotting and money pool stuff.

I am all in on these picks. We do well with high school hitters and college pitchers. If these guys are the best available, and they are because I am following the show as well, then great!!! I just hate we have to wait so long to see them in action.

22. Seattle Mariners: Colt Emerson, SS, Glenn (Ohio) HS

Who is Emerson? The first high school position drafted in the first three rounds from Ohio since Derek Dietrich in 2007, Emerson was the third baseman on the Team USA squad that won the 18-and-under World Cup last September. He was also an all-state wide receiver as a junior before giving up football his senior season to focus on baseball. A left-handed hitter, scouts love his swing and project him as a strong contact hitter, with some believing he can stick at shortstop and others thinking he ends up at third base.

Why the Mariners took him here: The Mariners drafted shortstop Cole Young in this range last season, and that pick has worked out so far, as Young is a top-100 overall prospect with a strong showing so far in the minors. Emerson is a similar player and after trading away their top middle infield prospects last year in the Luis Castillo trade, the Mariners are now restocked. Maybe Young and Emerson turn into their future double-play combination. -- Schoenfield
29. Seattle Mariners: Jonny Farmelo, CF, Westfield (Va.) HS

(for Julio Rodriguez winning ROY)

After taking a high school shortstop with their first pick, the Mariners go back to the prep ranks here. Farmelo is a late-blooming explosive outfielder who looks more like a center fielder now than he did a year ago and with a combination of hitting ability, power and speed.

30. Seattle Mariners: Tai Peete, SS, Trinity Christian (Ga.) HS

Peete is young for his class at age 17. He's a switch-hitting shortstop with plus power and also an early-round prospect on the mound as a pitcher. The question is if Peete's hit tool is strong enough to allow that power to play.

fuck.

this org can't develop talent.

all i want jerry to do is pick the best pitchers possible because they can yield better stuff in trades. for position players and hitters we're better off trying to acquire what real pro orgs develop.

I am more of a pitching kind of person and these high school players will take ages to develop. I guess in 2026-27 we will see if these guys can make it to that point.

Video scouting report »
Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45
After recovering from 2019 Tommy John surgery that cost him his high school senior year, McGraw projected as perhaps the best Saturday starter in the 2023 Draft, but his elbow gave out again right before this season started. He was sitting at 95-98 mph with a wipeout slider in intrasquad action when he went down and required a second elbow reconstruction with an internal brace. He may have more upside than fellow Wake Forest right-hander Rhett Lowder, a lock first-rounder, but McGraw can't match his consistency or health.
A healthy McGraw usually operates at 92-95 mph and tops out at 98 with his fastball, though it gets a lot more grounders than swings and misses because it features sinking action rather than carry. His best pitch is a mid-80s slider with sweep and depth that grades as plus when he lands it in the zone. He also dodges bats with an upper-80s changeup with fade and tumble.
While McGraw has the potential for three solid or better pitches, he has yet to harness them on a regular basis. He has the athleticism and delivery for at least average control and command, but he walked 5.8 batters per nine innings in his first two years with the Demon Deacons. A potential first-rounder before he got hurt, he's now a wild card.

Agreed, but you have to take best player available in baseball. It just seemed there wasn't top end pitching when Mariners made their picks I am good with it. The wait will be years but maybe worth. Maybe.
