The best pure hitter in the Texas high school ranks, Smith performed well at the Area Code Games and struck out just once in his first 20 games this spring. His bat could get him selected in the first three rounds, and if he doesn't turn pro, he'll play at Mississippi State and be Draft-eligible again as a sophomore in 2025.
Smith works with Trevor Story's hitting coach and has developed an advanced approach at the plate. He has good balance, takes a small stride and focuses on making hard contact from gap to gap with a quick right-handed stroke. He possesses a hit-over-power mentality but has the bat speed and strength to provide 20 homers per season.
There's more to like beyond Smith's bat. He has an athletic 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame that can add more strength, and he's a plus runner with arm strength to match. He has a chance to remain in center field and enough offensive potential and arm to profile in right should he move to a corner.
Can’t watch today. My only complaints were that there was too much money talk (I know it’s apart of it) and I find it weird that MLB doesn’t allow trading. IMO they have hurt the trade deadline by only having 1 and the expansion of the playoffs, so it’d be cool having a draft day trade. I also think it would help college baseball and when the MLB Network decides to put high profiled HS baseball games on because it would feel like you are watching potential Mariners. But this is nitpicking because I like the NFL draft.I am all in on these picks. We do well with high school hitters and college pitchers. If these guys are the best available, and they are because I am following the show as well, then great!!! I just hate we have to wait so long to see them in action.
They don't allow trading in order to protect smaller teams getting taken advantage of from bigger teams. That is what I read in the past and I call B.S. Trades are essential and if some smaller market team is acting like a farm team for a bigger market team, then step in and remove that team. It could be like the NFL draft and I am shocked they have not pushed for it. Trade away. Can’t watch today. I understand the “point” of them not wanting to do it but that is what the CBA is for and even then smaller market teams are collecting paychecks from the bigger market teams and high price free agents leave. Might as well just have the Dodgers give Pittsburgh 50 million for the number 1 pick. They don't allow trading in order to protect smaller teams getting taken advantage of from bigger teams. I have a nephew who is a really good high school player. He will be a senior here in town and is currently in Alaska on a travel team and he won an MVP award for it. A lefty that can fly. I just wanted to throw that in...lol.
I totally agree. Why should you ave to babysit billionaires? I hate the rule and I hate the draft cap crap. Our third player taken was because we needed an under slot player there and not the best player. They did the same thing years ago and took Barron the catcher and he turned around and screwed them and was crap in the end.I understand the “point” of them not wanting to do it but that is what the CBA is for and even then smaller market teams are collecting paychecks from the bigger market teams and high price free agents leave. I don't know that. He has an 18th birthday party on Saturday so I can ask him then. Are they using wood like the Cape does?
