Well according to all “experts” there weren’t any college hitters left so that kind of sucks but hopefully these kids work out.

Also want to say this is the first draft I’ve watched and they have done a really good job of making it feel big, but wish they’d allow trades and quit the slotting and money pool stuff.
100% agree regarding the last part.

The money pool stuff creates incentives for teams to take lesser players at the slotted spot. Perfect example is that the guy we took in the second round was apparently because he'd be cheap to sign.

So with the 3 1st Round Picks we took guys that were:

1- All high school picks
2- 2 SS's & 1 OF
3- All 3 bat left and throw right.

Love it.
Everything I had read was that the college talent was all so good that a number of the HS players who would be available later on would go much higher most years.

Farmelo really intrigues me. The rankings I've seen of him have varied substantially, but one scouting report I read on him said that he has a huge flaw in his swing yet still hits really well. This is what Keith Law said about him:

"Farmelo does it all wrong at the plate, with an arm bar and a bizarre launch-angly finish, but he’s so good at fouling stuff off that he performs anyway – and if someone just loosens him up and lets him hit freely, he might really take off. He had no trouble handling low-90s stuff from right-hander Bryce Eldridge in one of their matchups this spring, with exceptional hand-eye and a clear idea of what he needs to do at the plate to get a pitch he can hit hard. He’s a superb athlete and 65-70 runner who can definitely stay in center field, and should come into 55 power. He’s considered a strong commit to UVA, but that might be the worst choice for someone who needs this kind of swing adjustment, as UVA’s track record there is not strong. He’s a big upside play because even small changes to the swing could make him one of the best hitters for contact and average in the class."

It sounds to me like he's a guy who, if he had the right coaching would go a lot higher.

fuck.

this org can't develop talent.

all i want jerry to do is pick the best pitchers possible because they can yield better stuff in trades. for position players and hitters we're better off trying to acquire what real pro orgs develop.
I know there will be a ton of counter arguments to what I'm about to say, but here me out:

I think we can all agree that the Mariners have done a phenomenal job drafting and developing pitchers, so I'll focus on hitting, which I think they've done a decent job of lately, albeit we have yet to see it pay dividends at the major league level.

All these rankings are per MLB.com: Harry Ford is considered the 26th best prospect in baseball, Cole Young #57, Garbiel Gonzalez #98. Former Mariners prospects (who were ranked before being traded) Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo spent most of their career in the Mariners system and are ranked #17 and #25 respectively. It's yet to be seen how their careers will end up, but the last few years it actually looks like we've done a pretty solid job identifying and developing talent.

I feel like these days it's going to be harder to sign HS prospects with the NIL in place. The amount of money LSU threw at some UW softball players was in the six figures. I don't have any source on that other than someone I know who is well connected to the UW athletics program told me this.
