OK, this gives a good explanation.

In short up until 2024 his contract year is guaranteed two years in advance, 2025 is half guaranteed in 2023, then fully guaranteed in 2024. Every year thereafter is guaranteed one full year in advance.

One of the reasons Mahomes' deal is so unique, beyond the length, is that his yearly compensation guarantees in advance throughout the deal. As the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported, his 2020-2022 base salaries and roster bonuses are guaranteed alongside his $10 million signing bonus when the deal is signed. His 2023 compensation guarantees in 2021, his 2024 compensation guarantees in 2022 and most of his 2025 compensation guarantees in 2023, with the remainder guaranteeing in 2024. After that, Mahomes' money guarantees one year in advance, with his 2026 compensation locking in place in 2025, his 2027 compensation guaranteeing in 2026, and onward until 2030.

There's no precedent I can recall for that sort of guarantee structure.

Note: I thought i posted this much earlier. But her ot was sitting as a draft.

geezus, you can tell sports writers have barely anything to write about right now when they feel the need to write that article.
The funniest part is during the season they actually charge people extra if they want to read their "premium sports coverage".

I'm not sure how closely you follow the Cowboys, but he has...twice...and was one game away the other two of his four years. I'm not trying to portray that as fantastic or anything, just surprised a "Cowboy fan" wouldn't know that...
true. But not all packers fans keep up on the Cowboys :becky:

If you look at the contract the Chiefs can cut bait as early as 2023 with next to nothing dead cap
yes & no.
2023 salary & roster bonus + workout bonus fully guarantee on the 3rd league of 2021

so if they negate this in 2021 then yes. It would be 4 mil cap hit.
Otherwise in 2023 if cut his cap hit would be about 39 mil.

Yep, took a bit of digging, but I found that through 2024 each year is guaranteed 2 years prior. So to best cut year is after 2025 as his 2026 salary is peanuts or pre 2027, but 28 and beyond his salary will be hard to carry as dead money.

You guys are missing a huge part of the equation. You can't decide in 2021 to cut him as of 2023 but keep him on the team for those two years. The money doesn't stop guaranteeing until you cut him. So the only way to not pay the 2023 salary and bonuses is to cut him before the 3rd league day of 2021 and if you do that he is a FA immediately. If you cut him in 2023 the dead money is the $4M listed on spotrac, the 2023 and 2024 salary and bonuses and any unallocated roster bonus from previous year because it is normally split over 5 years. The only thing the $4M accounts for is the unallocated portion of the SB because it is the only thing already guaranteed. That $4M for 2023 will go up each year.

The dead money is way higher than posted above. Look at my post from the other day. I may have missed a number here or there but it basically outlines what he would get per year and in total for those years if cut and also the cap hit. All you have to do is follow spotrac salaries and the "notes" in this post

I don't understand why you would pay such a player so much money. I mean, Mike Francesa says that he's just not that good...

His cap numbers are much much higher since it's a yearly roster bonus contract.
I don't know why they're paying him mostly via bonuses, but they are. Maybe it saves the team money this way if the ever have to cut him.

Then again, I do believe roster bonuses are guaranteed when the season starts where base salary isn't.

I really don't know.

Interesting. I guess we'll see how it plays out in a couple of years.

Hopefully one day, Mahomes will be almost 2017 Wentz elite, that's the standard.

One more SB win and he'll be demanding more money.

Maybe, but I don't think he even demanded this contract.

If Mahomes continues to win football games, he could be one of the few NFL players to make as much money off the field over the next decade.

IIRC...didn't Steve Young get a similar type contract with the USFL.

Some type of personal services contract maybe.

But if another ring has Mahomes running back to KC looking for more money...they would be silly to even think about it.

My personal feeling on KC/Mahomes...they need to win another one before his cap hit starts to escalate....once he's in that $40mil range...it's going to be awful tough to add/keep top tier talent around him.
