Christopher Meola, who broke the news of the Dodgers agreeing to a deal with Kenta Maeda on Thursday, reports that the deal is an eight-year pact worth $24 million plus incentives.

According to Meola, the right-hander can earn an additional $10-12 million per season in incentives. It's certainly a creative way to structure the deal, as the Dodgers are only guaranteeing $3 million a year, limiting their overall risk. The 27-year-old hurler registered a 2.09 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 175/41 K/BB ratio over 206 1/3 innings in his final season in Japan.

Nice deal. M's, where were you on this?

I'm gonna go ahead and guess a lot of teams were in on him, but for a guy coming from Japan, the Los Angeles Dodgers are just a more interesting thing than the Seattle Mariners. If the Yankees signed him it would be no different. Now, if he signed with the Brewers I'd be with you in asking why we weren't more involved.

He said he only wanted west coast so that narrowed it down. He is friends with Kuma and Aoki per article so we had that going for us as well. Obviously we had the ownership angle as well. What we didn't have is the willingness to spend more money even for a Japanese player which tells you something.

But it was a bargain and only pays if he succeeds. Doesn't get better than that.
