I don't get the concept of a 4th OF. He had basically a full season last year and it was a career year for him. Where do you make the designation between a full timer and a 4th guy?
Cruz is a full timer. Murphy was better suited as a platoon bat. The Gentry/Murphy platoon was very productive last year. Then Muprhy got the majority of the playing time and Gentry sat.

Yes he played a lot last year but he was still considered that 4th OF'er type and he had stable buffer in Josh still being here on top of Nelly etc. That said this could just one of those down years for him. If he comes out next season and bats 280 with 15 home runs 75 RBI's then I frankly won't be surprised but when the times are trying and the season is coming in the home stretch it is all about what have you done for me lately and situational. I know Beltre doesn't have a long track record but I'm willing to bet he couldn't be as bad as Murphy. Murphy is just really bad this season and we're 2 days from Aug 1. At this point the team making the post season is far more important than risking not putting him in the lineup in some false home he'll magically figure it out. If he figures it out then he can do it after being benched and taking some time off. But it doesn't look like it is going to happen unfortunately. It's very disappointing and I have always been and still am a Wash backer but this is very disappointing to hear. He's managing the Texas Rangers, not the Texas David Murphys.

You're loyal. That's for sure.

Not sure about loyal but I usually try to be as fair as possible without knee jerking but one thing you have always heard me say in the chats is I am not oblivious to things Wash may do incorrectly and I don't and never have agreed with everything he's done and never will.

Just a heads up, I'm not knee jerking. My feeling is wash should've been gone three years ago.

No manager is perfect and my all time favorite manager with Texas was Oates but we had very little pitching. As has been said RW is a great clubhouse manager. And last night there was no issues with what was going on and who came in to pitch. The only error was with a tie game in the bottom of the 9th and a man on 1st that Murphy or a PH was not bunting to try and put the winning run in scoring position. The problem with that is it is a glaring mistake. For a guy who is bunt crazy to not do it then made no sense. And that is a constant theme with RW.
Nice and gently stated WST but utterly the truth.

He had a .333 babip last year that several of us indicated would be unsustainable. Guess what, it was. I'm fine with wash giving Murphy time to turn it around but it's well past that time. I don't care what he did last year, he's killing us this year and wash has said he won't give Beltre his shot in spite of all that. That is unacceptable to me. The man needs to go. Period.

Although, I agree Murph is killing us this year and Wash has made his share of mistakes, I still respect them both for what they have done in the past. I know in sports most of us are always in that "what have you done for me lately mode" but personally, I also like to remember what players and mangers have helped us do in the past and pay some tribute to the teams history. So I do care what players have done for us in the past regardless of present performance and that's not to say I don't get frustrated with them at times because I do. In the end though, I know my place as a fan. I have little to no control over what happens on the field and there is a good reason for that. There are tons of way more qualified people with those jobs and I feel like if they really wanted or valued my opinion on how to run their business, I would be on their payroll. This sort of thing usually detours me away from thinking that I know what is best for the organization, that and also the fact that I don't know what goes on behind closed doors.

Sounds like a personal issue. He's on the DL. Give it a rest. TEX isn't going to "get rid of him" ... so get a grip and engage on something that matters ... especially when you don't back up your perspective.

oh.

Guess we will see what happens... ultimately, I agree with you and would like to see Beltre but I have no control over it, so I am not going to stress. Who knows, maybe Murph will find it and end up making Wash look smart.

As a fan who supports this team with my time and money I don't feel bad at all about voicing my opinions. I realize nobody that matters will ever hear my opinion, but why even have message boards if we're not going to do so? This is a business, not YMCA league and at the end of the day you have to do what's best for the team. Removing wash and benching Murphy are what is best for this team.

Doesn't really answer my question though, how do you define someone as a 4th OF? What qualifies a player as such?
A player with extreme splits vs their same handed counterparts is a platoon player.

Someone who gets over exposed and regresses when placed in a full time role over time would be a start. That is exactly what happened with Murphy.

Maybe, but I'm not counting on it and I won't be happy when wash rides his stubbornness and this team right into the ground yet again.

Wait a second I'm confused... does giving 10 million plus to a player that is doing nothing at all this season and doesn't even care about the results of the team not "important?" Get a clue.

Edit: Quoting Wastinyourtime. Still getting used to this website

Makes sense, but it's only a .024 difference for Murphy, .259 career vs LH, .283 career vs RH. I don't really think that is pronounced like Baker's, .238 vs RH and .308 vs LH.

So like Hamilton? :)

Please tell me you're joking. Hamilton played three stellar seasons with Texas in a full time role before shutting down half way through 2012. Please tell me you weren't serious.

Personally, I think what makes the most sense as a definition of a 4th OF is the OF on the team that has the 4th most GP. I'm not sure stats or splits should have anything to do with it. To me, if you are backing people up most of the time, you have less GP... so that logically makes the most since as a definition IMO. I mean you can be a starter and a backup can have better stats than you... it happens all the time. A great example is Baker.
