Outside of Kirk, who's playing on the tag, who might be possible candidates for an extension, possibly during the season? Two obvious ones are those on contract years, i.e., Chris Baker and D-Jax. The other two would be Bashaud Breeland and Morgan Moses.
This obviously depends on how they perform and/or how others may play out during the season next year. If all these guys are candidates, anyone want to venture a guess how much they'd get? Keep in mind that, based on a projected $166M cap, Over The Cap projects our 2017 cap space at just over $40M. But a large part of that may get eaten up by the potentially large payday Kirk may end up getting. Maybe we could simply re-sign those on contract years between now and next offseason and figure out people like Breeland and Moses later on. But that could be dicey if we let that play out and we've got to play the tag game again.
One other thing to consider are teams with cap space that will also be looking for a QB in 2017. These include the Cardinals ($62.9M), Bears ($62.4M), Niners ($44.5M), and Browns ($44.2M). Tagging Kirk would again gobble up cap space, which could make re-signing others less likely. Or if you don't tag Kirk and let him test the market, one of those teams may give him a deal that may bust our cap -- one one that we can't match. This all may have informed the team's decision to stick to its guns on taking a hardline in its talks with Kirk these past few months. But whether it was or not, the Redskins have some difficult choose to a make, some which they may want to address sooner rather than later.
