Depends.

What if both schools pull in huge recruiting classes and in a few years those recruits are All-Americans winning games against teams that aren't given the recruiting advantage of more staff?

You are missing the point. Recruiting is based on very specific standards. Time, calls, visits and contact are all regulated. If an incoming staff is allowed to take over that role while the outgoing staff coaches the team, it allows for unlimited focus. In addition, in CFB, the size of the staff is regulated, coaches, GAs, etc... so when that is doubled for a month it allows for twice the spread o allocated contact. At UNC, the new staff is actually coaching the game, but at OSU, they are not so can focus only on recruiting while other staffs have to do both with half the staff.

People often ignore logic.

Its not that im ignoring or missing the point. Im just saying that even if they are able to go out and recruit all they want, what should the NCAA have done? Not given them a waiver? Who would you guys like to be coaching them in the bowl game? I havent heard an answer...Thats all im getting at, what the NCAA did to me seems like the only logical possibility, even if that means Meyer will have time to recruit more.

I would like for the same staff to be coaching and recruiting, with the same time and personnel limitations. For UNC, I guess it is not a big deal since it is, apparently, if I am reading you right.

However if Urban Meyer is going to be recruiting for the next month, he should be the active coach and coaching that game, which he isn't. When the news came out that he was calling every 4* and 5* guy in the country a week or so back, I assumed it meant he would be coaching in the bowl game. Apparently not.....

The role of recruiting and all of it's rules and regs should be connected to the current staff and transition to the new staff when they take over and not a moment sooner.

If you are recruiting in December, you also coach the game. If not, you have no business actively recruiting kids.

Fedora is coaching Southern Miss in their bowl game. Not carolina, but still its not like he has all month to just recruit. And i just think it sounds ridiculous for Meyer to come in and coach a team in a month. To me, that sounds a little absurb. I dont even know if that has ever happened before where a coach was hired and started coaching their team immediately in a bowl game. And, if TAMU hires a coach he isnt gonna be expected to coach in the bowl game either, the NCAA is never gonna make that happen. The reason we both have exceptions, i assume, is because we have had an interim coach all season. An interim coach typically coaches a team in the bowl game, which is what is happening at UNC, UCLA, OSU, TAMU, etc. If this was an exemption that i thought should/could be avoided i would understand, but i dont think its reasonable for Meyer or anyone else to come in and immediately coach in a bowl game, with less than a month with the team. Al Golden has all December to recruit as well, but nobody cared when they turned down their bowl game...They dont get time to practice for next year, but neither do UNC and OSU (because the offense will be completely different next year, and they dont have a coach their preparing them for next year.

Im sorry. Im not trying to troll. I just dont understand the issue. Obviously it isnt fair for Meyer to only recruit...but he cant coach in the game...Sumlin is not going to be coaching TAMU in the bowl game, why should Meyer and Fedora be forced to coach in theirs. I think the only reason it seems like an issue is because of the term "exemption" when in reality they arent really getting special treatment.

Meyer should not be forced to coach, he just shouldn't be allowed to say a word to a recruit until he is the coach.

So, since a coach that plans a bringing in a whole new staff they wouldnt be able to recruit at all until after the bowl game? No way would Withers continue to recruit if he new he wasnt coming back. I understand why you wouldnt want it to happen, it just doesnt seem logical. Sumlin wouldnt be able to talk to a recruit until January?

It is what it is. Call it a punishment for having to make a coaching change. A school should not have twice the staff to devote to both jobs.

I understand that ^^ a lot more than complaining about an exemption. I thought you were just upset Carolina and Ohio State were given exemptions. But if that were to become a rule i think teams that dont go to bowls for whatever reason shouldnt be allowed to recruit at all either (even though i dont know how it would be enforced).

Is it possible that there is more to this than the black and white picture that has been painted? With as strict as the NCAA is trying to be, especially with recruiting, this doesn't make sense. Urban Meyer must have some limitations to when and how he can actually visit and pursue recruits.

If so he either:

A. has not been abiding by his rules

B. whatever his limit is, it has to be up right now for the next two years

Even though the Canes were technically elligible, we opted out of a bowl. We are able to recruit during December but we can not practice (like other bowl eligible teams) The Canes need the practice so this is very punishing to us.

I understand that completely. But Ohio State and UNC could have opted out of a bowl and it wouldnt have effected them as much as Miami, because practicing under Withers and Shoop is not going to beneficial for next year because the entire offense, and who knows about the defense, is going to be much different. Practicing under your head coach for next year, which would have been the case at miami, is beneficial. Had Miami fired Golden though, it would be the same situation that UNC and Ohio State are in, in which they had all December to recruit.

I'm 50/50 on this.. I think it's unfair both ways if they were to say Meyer can't recruit. Meyer certainly shouldn't be punished for being a new coach. Also, this team in the bowl game isn't Meyers so he has no business coaching it. Your point about getting to recruit full time is pretty unfair though w/ the current overloaded staff. I guess it's just a fortunate situation for them as I can't see punishing them in anyway w/o a shit storm.

Ohio State and North Carolina are essentially allowed to have two coaching staffs up until the bowl gams. Meyer and Fedora, along with their staffs are allowed to recruit while the outgoing coaching staff coaches for the game.

Meanwhile, all of the other schools, who didn't break any rules have to split the duties of coaching and recruiting among their current staff.

What a fucking joke......

Total fucking bullshit.

No extra benefits or scholarships gained for UNC? No penalties handed down to Clemson and Virginia Tech? Swofford must be fucking pissed about this.

Lightning struck twice Monday night in Buckeye-Land, as Ohio State added two high-profile commitments in the space of a few hours. Tommy Schutt started the ball rolling early in the evening, and now comes word that Se'Von Pittman has switched his commitment from Michigan State to Ohio State.

On Monday, December 12, 2011, Buckeye fans learned why their optimism was so well-founded, as Meyer landed two high-profile commits in the space of a few hours. First, it was

"I have committed to Ohio State," Pittman stated Monday night. "Coach (Urban) Meyer and Coach (Luke) Fickell were at my house tonight, and I told them I wanted to be a Buckeye. We shook hands and then they headed back to Columbus
