they wanted more of a run option oriented offense philosophy and they get that from Bevell until they get down to the goal line and throw the ball from the 4 yd line on a 3rd and 1

From Rotoworld

Lions hired ex-Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator.
The Lions were turned down by many other candidates, but they finally found someone to take the job. Bevell was interviewed for the Falcons and Jaguars openings, but those jobs went to Dirk Koetter and John DeFilippo, respectively. Bevell will now call plays for defensive-minded coach Matt Patricia, who ran the offense into the ground in his first year on the job by putting shackles on OC Jim Bob Cooter and Matthew Stafford. As a run-first guy, Bevell fits Patricia's personality. The Lions will be better off once Patricia is out of Detroit. Jan 16 - 4:05 PM

Again i like this hire I think he did a great job developing Wilson and running a poorly put together offense(from a talent perspective) while in Seattle and if we get to the Superbowl he can call all the pass plays he wants from the 1 yard line :thumb:

IMO, Patricia has to have success this year or else he is out.

I liked Caldwell and regressed this year.

Interesting from a statistical point of view

TWENTYMAN: 5 things to know about offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell

Bevell’s offenses have finished in the top 10 in rushing percentage eight times in his 12 years as an OC. That’s important because running the football efficiently and being balanced on offense is an important part of head coach Matt Patricia’s coaching philosophy.

During a four-year stretch between 2012 and 2015 as Seattle’s OC, Bevell’s offense was top 10 in scoring each year and ranked in the top four in rushing each season. They were the No. 1 rushing team in football in 2014.

In eight of Bevell’s 12 years as a coordinator, he’s led a top 15 scoring offense. Five times he’s led a top five scoring offense.

2007 – Minnesota: 15th

2008 – Minnesota: 12th

2009 – Minnesota: 2nd

2012 – Seattle: 9th

2013 – Seattle: 8th

2014 – Seattle: 10th

2015 – Seattle: 4th

So you are OK with Caldwell being the HC at OH St?

It is interesting when we look at actual facts.

I think we got a decent fit. I am taking a wait and see approach. I have given up on Stafford being the guy to carry the offense. He has regressed in the last year or so. Hopefully Bevell straightens him out and design plays that are better suited for Staff and the rest of the offense. Definitely need another RB similar to KJ.

The thing to remember is football will always be more about blocking and tackling first. Do those things well first and the rest is a lot easier.

yes indeed.

The fact is at the beginning of Bevell's stint at Hawks he arguably had a better O-Line , a much better RB in Skittles, not so much in QB Hasselbeck but Skittles vision and power run game is head and shoulders above what KJ has at this time.

In Minnesota having Favre and A.P. at that short period of time was/is arguably better than Stafford/KJ. It was the one time where A.P. excelled as a pass catching RB (maybe another year thrown in there).

Skittles wasn't used much as a out of the backfield pass catching RB (once again going off memory, so I'm probably wrong here also).

Bottom line, imo, is that Bevell, Davidson and Godsey had better come up with another RB who can spell KJ in the run and pass game because counting on KJ to make it through 16 games in a season isn't likely, imo. Also, KJ doesn't currently have the physical running style that Skittles and A.P. had which Bevell could rely upon. You add in the ability of Wilson escaping the rush and moving up into pocket or even outside the hashes to go through progressions or even take off and run helped Bevell quite a bit. Stafford isn't similar to Wilson in that respect.

Bevell is going to need to have a move TE with speed, ability to chip block, beat 1^1's to open up 1^1's for other WR's and holes for the run game intertwined. (not to mention another WR to stretch the field, get separation, have great hands, etc.)

Only two of those you listed are without a HOF QB. And those had a HOF RB.

We don't have either of those.
