Yeah, and now we have Savage. Thanks a lot. That would have been reason enough not to hire anyone from Houston.

I'd much rather give Cook every opportunity to take the backup job.

And he will. Savage will be lucky to make the roster.

Midseason by the numbers: Lions on pace for worst defensive season ever

5th: The Darrell Bevell hire is proving to be a good one on most fronts. While the running game is a problem -- and that was true even before the Kerryon Johnson injury -- the passing game has been so good that Detroit still ranked fifth in total offense in the first half of the season. It hasn’t finished a season ranked in the top five since 2012.

26.5: The offense has been good, and sometimes really good, but it hasn’t been good enough to overcome that dreadful defense. Detroit is scoring 26.5 points per game in its losses this season. That’d be enough points to rank among the 10 best offenses for the season, and Detroit still managed to lose all those games. This might not surprise you, but nobody is scoring more points in losses this season. Nobody.

With our luck the Jets or Cinci will hire Bevel to be their HC next year.

THE BEVELL BAD

Midseason by the numbers: Lions on pace for worst defensive season ever

50: While the offense is among the most productive in the league, its scoring touch isn’t. Detroit is averaging 25.5 points per game, which ranks 12th in the league. That’s respectable, but not exactly commensurate with their big yardage numbers. Their struggles as they approach the end zone are the biggest reason why. They’re converting just 50% of their goal-to-go opportunities into touchdowns, which is 27th in the league. They check in at 58.3% overall in the red zone, which is 17th. Matthew Stafford has done his part, throwing 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the red zone, but the lack of a running threat is hurting them. Detroit doesn’t have a player ranked inside the top 45 in red-zone rushing, and it gets worse at the goal line. Lions players have scored just twice on eight carries inside the 5-yard line.

Midseason by the numbers: Lions on pace for worst defensive season ever

3: On the plus side, the Lions have still been able to move the ball through the air. All three of their starting receivers rank among the 21 best players at the position, according to PFF. Kenny Golladay checks in at No. 14, followed by Marvin Jones (19th) and Danny Amendola (21st). No other team has three receivers ranked so highly, and just Houston and Tampa Bay have even two. You could make a case Detroit has the deepest trio of wideouts in the league right now.

@Rollingthndr

1: Sticking once more with the advanced analytics, there was some debate in the press room before the season about which offensive lineman would have the highest grade this season. Rick Wagner and Graham Glasgow were the popular choices, but through the first half of the season, it has been Frank Ragnow, who is the No. 1 center in the game. Not bad for a guy who just moved to the position, eh? His run blocking has been especially dominant. Glasgow is next best at No. 10 among the guards, followed by Joe Dahl (29th). Detroit’s worst offensive linemen have been the tackles, with Taylor Decker ranking 32nd at the position and Wagner 58th. Wagner has already allowed 25 pressures this season, ninth most in the league regardless of position.

Midseason by the numbers: Lions on pace for worst defensive season ever

8: The Lions got eight 100-yard receiving performances in the first half of the season, a team record. Kenny Golladay leads the way with four. Marvin Jones had two (and racked up 93 yards in another game), and Danny Amendola too (with another game of 95 yards). Tight end T.J. Hockenson added one.

98.3: That’s the catch rate for Detroit’s top four receivers. Not bad, eh? Matthew Stafford has been victimized by drops over the years, and there was once a narrative that he threw too hard for his receivers to have a high catch rate. This season, though, his top four guys have snagged 115 of 117 catchable balls. Marvin Jones is tied for the league lead for most catches (42) without a drop, while Marvin Hall hasn’t dropped any of his five catchable passes. Kenny Golladay and Danny Amendola have one drop apiece.

10.5: Detroit is starting games fast, averaging 8.5 points per first quarter. That’s third in the league. Again, offense really isn’t an issue. They’re scoring in bunches, especially early, and that’s putting Detroit in good position most weeks. But the defense just isn’t pulling its weight, especially in the fourth quarter, where they’re allowing 10.5 points per game -- more than everybody in the league. Hard to win like that, even with an explosive offense.

not so sure either of them give up so quickly on Gase and Taylor that soon but maybe Nagy gets the boot and Chico State takes Bevell. not even sure that would happen after just two years in for Nagy.

10 takeaways from Bevell & Pasqualoni

7. Wide receivers Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. are playing really good football right now. The pair are on pace for more than 1,000 receiving yards each and more than 10 touchdowns. Bevell said it’s a combination of size, seeing the ball well and being able to play it well in the air that makes both receivers unique playmakers down the field. The Lions lead the league in 20-plus-yard passing plays, and Golladay and Jones are a big reason why.

Are you sure it's not overpaid actors?
When the Defense sucks the Offense steps up and when the Defense does show up the Offense slacks off.
Stafford has given Joh Kitna results... useless yardage while afraid to put it in the end zone. When the offense is blossoming the defense wont show up, when the Defense shows up the offense will struggle, funny how that works that both don't show up in the same season.

Starting the season in a tie against the Cardinals (who just picked #1 about 5 months earlier) was a sign that this defense was in for a long season.

If the defense keeps going this way he could be OUR HC sometime next season.

Nepotism with MP will prevent that from happening.

Besides, BQ is ball-less and clueless all at the same time whether it's FO related, coaching hires/not firing or which players to keep or obtain.

I Cannot wait to see BQ/MP/PP/Davidson gone all the while J. Davis packs their bags and his then follows them out the door.

It can't come soon enough.

It's not changing anytime soon while MP is here as his ego has gotten in his way.

It's coaches like him that I bitch about constantly for not being diverse and flexible. You cannot fix stupidity like he has shown for the last 24 regular games.

Starting the season in a tie against the Cardinals (who just picked #1 about 5 months earlier) was a sign that this defense was in for a long season.

A HC with any high football IQ would have made distinctive changes immediately after that game going forward and throughout the remaining games including in games at any given time.

I'm done waiting for MP to prove he has the chops to do as such with the noted above.
