SAN DIEGO — The Mariners had a list of just two players — both pitchers — whom they wanted to select, if available, with the sixth overall pick in the Thursday’s Rule 5 draft. If neither pitcher was available, they would pass.

Fortunately for general manager Jerry Dipoto, that narrow range was still rewarded. The Mariners selected hard-throwing right-handed pitcher Yohan Ramirez from the Houston Astros organization.

seems they will keep...yohan

I understand and thank you for saying as such and I appreciate you addressing me... I don't take it personally.

I'm glad you didn't take it personally because it wasn't personal. The media is the main pusher of this story line. I agree with you that it is M's inability to develop or the fact they were both just good college players which doesn't mean you will be a good pro player. I looked up years ago some of the all-time leading hitters in college and you won't recognize very many names because they didn't make it in/to the pros. So weird but that is how baseball works.

Just curious, but what did you mean by, "I appreciate you addressing me"?

its hard to judge...where a player will....... top out... in development...so you try drafting..players you think can make it to the majors
obviously some look better than others
and some players make it to the majors with more development to go

that is a verry short version of what is going on in the minors

many of those top hitters in college...are.. toping out... there in college.....or are close to topping out

The season actually went better than I expected it would. Back when they were in contention for worst record the first 20 games or so I thought that's where they'd be all year. The only real disappointment for me is that this team probably makes the playoffs with a mediocre bullpen. Not that I'd expect them to do anything obviously, but it still would have been cool to see and a good learning experience for everyone.

With the season over I have some positive and negatives for what I have seen.

Negatives:

1. Evan White can hit a freaking tree with an axe. Don't get me wrong he has a major league glove but he needs a lot of work at his appropriate at the plate. He is a rookie with plenty of room to develop but having locked him in for 6 years this needs to be addressed.

2. Kikuchi is not good enough to play in the MLB.

3. JP Crawford similar to White its great they have a good glove but the approach to the plate isn't great on a team that is contending he would be useful but I think the plan is to hang on long enough with him until Noelvi Marte can make his debut.

4. Shed Long doesn't look like the answer at 2nd base.

Positives:

1. Kyle Lewis looks like our guy to build around in the lineup he looks like he could be a Justin Upton

2. Both Justin Dunn and Justus Sheffield did pretty well this season having started the season and finished the season. They both have had some rough games but also had games where they bounced back with great outings. Our rotation will look good next year with Marco, Sheffield, Dunn then Logan Gilbert maybe even George Kirby if he can compete for that last spot or go after a premier pitcher in free agency.

3. Ty France and trades (surprise) this guy looks like he can be in our lineup for years to come especially if he can play 2nd and 3rd. Dipoto did a pretty good job with trades this season signing Walker to nothing and getting a prospect in return, acquiring Taylor Trammel trading away players that were 30 plus years old.

4. Not looking like a joke. I know 27-33 isn't great but being only 2 games behind the Astros and looking like a team that wants to play and compete against our division opponents is great for a change. I honestly think the days of being the bottom of the division like where the Rangers are is behind us. Each year we have good prospects that will be called up I think we are in a good spot.

I said Jermaine Dye, but I'm probably older.

My only fear with Lewis, the same fear I have will all rookies, is he really dropped in power and average. He hit 11 for his last 75 for a .147 average (September stats) with 3 HR's, 7 RBI's.

Yeah hard to really tell what happened maybe he relaxed a little knowing that the season was coming to an end and the Mariners weren't making the playoffs.

I think he just tired out which happens to a lot of rookies. The legs go, then the power goes and he lost power at the end and his swings were late causing him to guess more. It happens, but the real test is next year and how he preps for it.

I haven't been paying much attention this off season yet, but has anyone heard anything about this up coming season? How the Covid situation will impact ST or the season schedule? If I do hear something (other than useless rumors) I will post on here.
PS: Happy New Year. :noidea: :suds:

Well, it sounds like on July 23rd or 24th we'll see the season opener. Watching the games on the TV but no fans in the seats. Will be a strange line up of teams playing but I guess it might be better than nothing. 2020 is a messed up year all the way around. For Washingtonians, our Gov says we ALL have to wear masks until either a vaccine is available or an approved treatment modality is available. Sounds to me like mask for probably the rest of the year. :noidea: :gaah:

:pound:GO MARINERS :pound:
:pound:LOL- My post from way back in last spring/summer. Still wearing the masks in 2021 and things are still a friggin mess. Never thought things would still be crazy. Oh well...."and so it goes".
