Mariners and RHP Rafael Montero avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.25 million contract.​

Montero was acquired from the Rangers via trade last month. He could begin the 2021 season as the Mariners' closer.

The international signs do not draw nearly the attention of those who are selected in the MLB Draft as the players involved are in large part much younger, less projectable and further from the big leagues. Nonetheless, adding international talent is of importance when it comes to organization building, so with the future in mind it is worth taking a look.

While the Mariners have yet to confirm, Baseball America reports Seattle has signed nine players, two of which fall in the publication’s top 50 rankings. Starlin Aguilar, a shortstop/third baseman who turns 17 later this month, comes in at No. 24 with BA liking his left-handed swing and potential for power. Of note on Aguilar, he has trained in the Domincan Republic with the trainer whose program produced Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers and Tampa Bay’s Wander Franco, baseball’s No. 1 overall prospect.

Gabriel Gonzales, an outfielder out of Venezuela, is the other Mariners signing in the top 50 – he lands at No. 30. According to BA, the 17 year old “has a good track record of hitting and hitting for power against live pitching, with an aggressive approach and swing that might ultimately lead to a power-over-hit profile.”

Well the other board is dead. It is nice to see they resigned some guys but a few relievers have been scooped up that would’ve loved the M’s to get. Are they going to make any real move this offseason?

Tigers signed RHP Andrew Moore to a minor league contract.​

The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 5.51 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33/9 K/BB ratio over 63 2/3 innings at the big league level, all but 4 2/3 of which came during the 2017 season with the Mariners. He'll add much-needed organizational bullpen depth for the Tigers.

So the Mariners have missed on all of the free agents they need for 2022, can’t someone pull off a deal for Snell and Lindor...but can afford to bring Iwakuka back as the highest paid consultant in history (if you add in his trips back and forth to Japan)

It is their yearly offseason distraction. I knew when they didn't claim Hand that they were not in it to win it. Then the Kuma deal was the Ichiro move or bring back Jr move. It is so much cheaper to distract with a move like this. We are still in the days of Jeffrey Smulyan. Nothing has changed but the names.

It's the M's way about things. Always a day late and a dollar short. What does Kuma have to offer as a consultant? Sounds a little strange to me.

Scouting, which is what Ichiro was suppose to be a big part in bringing in Ohtani but it didn’t work. Just venting because they don’t have to do with each other, but getting a professional medical staff together should be a priority over Japanese baseball.
