The Brewers, Cubs, Nationals, Indians, Mariners, Orioles, Rangers, Rays, and Pirates are all considering non-Fielder upgrades at first base. Carlos Pena, Casey Kotchman, and Derrek Lee remain unsigned, among others.

I'm not sure that any of those would be huge upgrades over Moreland, besides maybe Lee. Pena can hit for power but his average isn't stellar. Sounds like Moreland if you ask me.

Could be but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets only five year deal (through his 32yo season).

Cecil Fielder's output dropped off after his 32yo season and his 34yo season was his last.

Pedigry as it is ... teams might give him an option year past five ... but I wouldn't be surprised if nobody gives him a hard offer over five either.

the list of teams that would be willing to offer more than 5years is small, the Nationals and maybe Seattle and neither is willing to go more than 20M a year.

Both Kyle Lohse and Jake Westbrook remain available, and the Rangers may be willing to trade Matt Harrison for a more established starter.

Scotty ... I missed this report. Who was it that thinks TEX might want to move a 25 yo to make room for a 32 or 33yo with the same output?

Maybe TEX would make the move but I just don't see it considering TEX track record.

Define more established. It would have to be for one hell of a starter to let Harrison go. Wonder what the A's are wanting just for bailey. Could you imagine this bullpen?

Nathan
Adams
Ogando
Bailey
Oliver
Lowe
Uehara
Feldman

That is just nasty

It probably depends on what the starting rotation is. If its 7 then you probably drop Lowe as he his basically ogando 2.0.

Check that. I don't see any of those guys being a significant upgrade over Moreland if an upgrade at all with moreland's upside. Unless they're planning a trade involving Moreland or nelly this may just be a smokescreen.

i think the Rangers may be planning exactly that with Moreland and Harrison. any trade that brings in Bailey and possibly a starter probably starts with them

Harrison for Bailey alone would be a horrible trade for the Rangers. There's something cooking it sounds like but I have no idea what it is.

i didn't mean to imply that we would trade Harrison for Bailey. i think we will trade for Bailey but Harrison will not be part of that deal.

25M a year is more than pujois is getting

My mistake. I thought you said he wouldn't settle for less than Puljos and I was thinking 5 yrs @ $125 million seems to be less than 10 years @ $254 million.

Am confused on who the starters would be with your proposed bullpen above. If you trade Harrison for some super pitcher (TBD) and demote Ogando who is your fifth starter?

Going with 13 pitchers isn't totally uncommon but if pitching is your strength then you ought to be able to go with 12 (or even 11) ... making room for 13 (or 14) positional players.

What is uncommon with that 8man bullpen is that Oliver is the only lefty. TEX will probably want two LH RPs.

Also ... if you are going to demote Ogando and put him in the bullpen ... then Lowe serves no purpose. At Lowe's best he is the same guy as Ogando except not as good.

And if Bailey is in that bullpen then there is no reason to demote Ogando but if you do then Lowe is doubly redundant.

Mark my words ... if TEX signs Darvish then I bet Tateyama makes the roster to serve as a mentor for Darvish. Tateyama and Darvish were on the Ham Fighter's pitching staff for 4 of the last 5 seasons.

That bullpen was not contingent on Harrison being traded. I also agree that Lowe is redundant, especially if Bailey is involved. Read some after that post. We discussed these very things. Admittedly an 8 man bullpen might be one two many. I was just throwing any possibilities out there, and remember that uehara had better numbers against lefties than righties last year. Oliver and uehara could hold down the lefty specialists roles.

Honestly my guess is Feliz starts the year in AAA to polish as a starter and Texas rolls with this rotation.

Lewis
Holland
Darvish
Harrison
Ogando

If Feliz starts with the big club he'll be the #5 and ogando will probably be moved to the pen.

Adams
Ogando
Oliver
Lowe
Uehara

"who is your fifth starter?" ... I think you are counting on Feliz to be your fifth starter which is possible ... but coupled with counting on Darvish being one of them too may be too high risk for TEX ... as that will factor into TEX considering to move Harrison for another TBD starter before all that is decided in ST.

Actually ... signing Darvish may be what causes TEX to not include Feliz in its opening day rotation ... and having him pitch in AAA for a couple of months.

I'm not counting on Feliz to start the season at all. I expect him to start in AAA, as he should in my opinion. Provided ogando develops some sort of off speed pitch such as a change up or curve ball he looked so good in the first half that I hesitate to demote him to the bullpen, even as useful as he is there. I stated in my last post I expect ogando to be in the rotation. That leaves a bullpen looking like this.

Nathan
Adams
Lowe
Oliver
Uehara
Tateyama/ or possibly another lefty
Feldman

If bailey happens Lowe or Tateyama goes away.

Bullpen is a pretty solid right now minus the needed LHPs, I see no need to go after someone like Bailey, and I see no reason to trade a young LH starter in Harrison, as the feasible options out there aren't really upgrades at all

Lewis
Holland
Darvish
Harrison
Feliz (I predict he pitches well in ST and earns the 5th spot, just like last year, sending Ogando to the bullpen this time)

Nathan
Adams
Oliver (FA)
Uehara
Ogando
Lowe/Other LHP
Tateyama/Other LHP
Feldman

I see the only potential changes here are swapping Lowe or Tateyama for an additional LH reliever

I doubt they carry more than two lefties. Especially if they're just loogys

Even though the Rangers have a great deal of rotation depth with the expected addition of Yu Darvish, it's not a certainty that they will deal one of their starters, writes Buster Olney of ESPN.com (Insider req'd). Even after the departure of C.J. Wilson, Olney rates the club's rotation as the sixth-best in baseball.
