It wouldn't shock me if Darvish refuses to negotiate with Toronto. I think that has something to do with the delay in the announcement of the winning bid. Nippon is begging him to deal since they get $50 million if he signs and nothing when he bolts next year.

Darvish has two or three more years before he can leave Japan as a free agent. So they could post him again next year. Of course they might not get as much money since there are going to be more pitchers on the market next year.

My understanding is he can leave next year if he wants.

Darvish is 25 and will not become a free agent for the international market until after the 2014 season. If he is to be fitted for a major league uniform before then, it will have to be through the posting system, a transfer arrangement allowing players under contract in Japan to sign with major league teams ahead of free agency.

I seem to remember hearing that he can leave next year too. Maybe after going through the system once he is free.

On another topic. How stupid is billy beane? He wants the freaking farm for gio but practically gave Cahill to the diamondbacks. Does he really think people will just sell everything to get a pitcher who's of about the same quality and has pitched in a pitcher friendly park after taking so little for Cahill?

# The Rangers, who are pursuing Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey, can be expected to try to trade for Gonzalez or Matt Garza if they don't win the bidding on Yu Darvish, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
# ESPN.com's Buster Olney also reports that the Rangers are likely to pursue Gonzalez if they miss out on Darvish. He tweets that 20-year-old left-hander Martin Perez would "almost have to be" in a deal between the A's and Rangers.

I'll go on record right now as saying if they trade Perez for Gio I'm going to be livid. Gio isn't anything special, I'd rather have gone after Cahill.

The Rangers invited recent non-tender Fabio Castillo and catcher Chris Robinson to Spring Training, according to Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest.com (on Twitter). The Rangers signed former supplemental first round pick Zach Jackson, according to Goldstein.

Same here...

I'm not opposed to trading Perez... but it would have to be for "the right guy"... and I dont see Gio being that guy.

Plus I'm hearing Perez & Olt ?!? hahahahahahhaa. No.

I'd do that package for Halladay, Kershaw, or maybe Verlander but not many more. Price perhaps, I just have always like his game.

Olt is a potential trade piece as we have Beltre manning third for a while. He could play first, but his high k rate just brings back memories of Chris Davis.

No way would I trade Perez for gio, even straight up. As far as I am concerned unless halladay, kershaw, verlander or someone like him is on the table Perez and Profar are untouchable. Maybe Ramirez for the right guy. But beane really screwed himself with that Cahill trade.

Garza is very good as well, but again I'm not sure he's Perez worthy. I would be more interested in garza than gio though. Our hitters lot gio up multiple times last year. Hes not worth A level prospects.

It will be the bluejays. It's borderline official as it is. I don't see any way that texas put in a 50+ million dollar bid. I'll be kind of pissed if they did.

On another note. Why not consider wandy Rodriguez? Houston is reportedly dangling him out there and while he's not an ace he is good. No way would I trade some top prospects for him but if they aren't wanting the moon he could be a good acquisition.

I thought they were asking for the moon last year at the deadline which is why no one bit.

As for Darvish, if Texas FO went into the offseason with the intent on getting him, I'd be ok with a $50M bid. If that is why they didn't even put out an actual offer to CJ, because they were all in on Yu and didn't want CJ anymore then I'll trust their scouting. $50M up front and then 5/$75 isn't too terrible if he turns out the way most think he will. 5/$125M is not unheard of as long as he becomes a true ace like expected.

Maybe Houston learned from last year. Apparently it's all but official that it was the bluejays. We'll see today around 7.

heyman via twitter: This is all still speculation, but fwiw folks whove spoken to #bluejays people say they don't seem confident they won darvish bid.

also, this from olney via twitter: Most folks guessing/assuming Jays have won Darvish bidding. But just got off the phone with an AL exec who speculates smart $ is on Rangers.
