So was Maddux's trip to Chicago just a ploy to get some face time with his bro and sell him on the Rangers??? Probably not, but it's funny to think about.

On a side note, give me CJ to the Marlins. That might have been the best development so far. They are going to offer him the best deal I would imagine, and you know he would love to swing the bat every 5 games. Keeps him out of Anaheim and NY, which is what I worry about most.

If CJ ends up in the NL and Garza a Ranger then I would call that a win.

I think Miami is playing the old Tom Hicks game. Announce to everyone that will listen about all these big names they are talking to, dining with, etc. Then they make their offer, which is half what others are reportedly making, and then tell their fanbase "well we are trying, we just can't quite land anyone".

How in the world is this true? Garza has thrown 180+ innings since 2008, most of which was done in the AL East. with an ERA around 3.80. Who in the Rangers rotation penciled in has had that type of production?

He's good, but the Cubs are going to want to recoup what they gave up for him and he's not worth that price, plus whatever we have to pay him, pass

He's not an upgrade once you consider the cost to get him

have to agree about Garza. i would rather spend the price on either Wade Davis or Jeff Niemann

Let's put this in perspective. If it is between trading for Garza or resigning Wilson ... I'd figure a way to make the deal for Garza.

-More upside potential than CJ
-Adds balance with another power RH arm in the rotation along with potentially Ogando
-Cheaper than CJ

Does depend on what CHC wants for him ... but with Darvish probably not an option and an unknown AAAA entity in any case ... and knowing CJ's ceiling by his past performance ... seems like Garza would be an outstanding option as a tested #1 ... rather than a Rich Harden/Brandon Webb experiment.

Funny you think you know CJs ceiling after a whopping two years as a starter.

latest news - 11/30/2011

1) The Rangers signed Joe Nathan last week, but they're still exploring ways of adding relief help, since they aim to enter the 2012 season with the strongest bullpen possible. They're one of the teams trying to trade for A's closer Andrew Bailey, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. ESPN.com's Buster Olney notes that the Red Sox are also pursuing Bailey (Twitter link).

The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 3.24 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 41 2/3 innings in 2011 after recovering a forearm strain that sidelined him early in the season. MLBTR projects a $3.5MM salary for Bailey in 2012. One of Rosenthal's sources promised that the Rangers will add another reliever to join Nathan, Mike Adams and Koji Uehara at the back end of the bullpen. The Red Sox, who lost Jonathan Papelbon to the Phillies, also have interest in adding to the back end of their bullpen this offseason.

What's that price? Two top prospects I would imagine. You keep a handful of guys off limits and go from there.

There is no guarantee that any of those guys are going to work out, but you know that Garza is a proven pro who should has his best days ahead of him.

At 31 he isn't going to get much better, or so the odds would say.

if in your assumption you are looking at him like you would a 31-year-old starter who had been starting all of his MLB career then you would have a valid point but he has only been starting for 2 years and before that he was a reliever who only averaged about 40-50 innings a season. as a starter CJ could and should show improvement over the next 2 possible 3 seasons because of the minimum stain on his arm.

His arm is developed. It isn't going to get stronger. The plus side is that he doesn't have the wear, but athletes don't get better at age 31 as far as their skills are concerned. Might he learn to pitch smarter, maybe. That might be worth another few wins in the regular season, and I doubt he would consistently pitch poorly in the post season. I don't count that as a high ceiling to grow into.

If you get an improvement on 16 wins a season for each of the next 2 or 3 seasons and better performance in the post-season then he continues to have an upside.

6 years $120 million worth of improvement?

have you heard any legitimate source for those numbers? i think 4 years 60M with possibly an optional 5th year at 15M is about all he is going to get.

would that give us 3 or 4 closers? Nathan, Adams, Bailey & Feliz

Well Feliz is being moved to the rotation at this point. So right now the bullpen looks like:

Uehara
Lowe
Adams
Nathan

Starters:

Holland
Ogando
Lewis
Harrison

Pitchers battling for 5th spot but could be moved to bullpen:

Feliz
Feldman

This means is if Texas doesn't re-sign CJ or another starter. They will still need a lefty specialist. Uehara could be that guy, but last year showed what a lot of innings does to him, so they'll need to limit his appearances. I really would like them to re-sign Gonzalez.

That's a lot of if's for a guy who struggles in big games, ran out of gas last season and has lost a little on his fastball.

You can take Feliz out of there. He's done as a closer after Game 6. Adams is still the 8th inning guy. That would leave Nathan and Bailey to duke it out. I actually think they would slide Adams to the 7th and then have Bailey in the 8th.
