You really think there's ANY CHANCE that Gilbert gives I.T. 200M?
I'm not convinced anyone will to be honest.
He's a 1 year rental (assuming he wants a max) to give the Cavs and LeBron one more crack at the Warriors.
Please don't say that I'm just now hating on the Cavs and I.T., because I have said many times before that Boston would be nuts to offer him a max next summer.

Isn't Kyrie a 2 year rental?

Really, really poor job by Boston considering the pressure Cleveland was under because of the Irving trade demand.

It was so incredibly lopsided, it makes me wonder if they know something about Thomas' hip that the rest of us don't.

Irving is an extremely minor upgrade over Thomas. To give up a lock top 5 pick, one of the more league friendly contracts in Crowder and throw in another first round pick (that I have no idea about) makes zero sense unless Thomas is damaged goods.

As I was in a bar seeing the trade on TV I was thinking it was a big win for Boston. Here was the #1 seed in the east who just upgraded with one of the best PGs in the league along with the addition of Haywood (one of my favorite NBA players) not to mention the help they got in the draft. I saw this as a monster offseason for the team who was already the top seed in the east.

But after looking at it closer I see it as you do. Boston still did a good job of improving their team but man did they give up a lot for a marginal upgrade at PG.

The first round pick is what puts everything over the edge. IT is a free agent next season and they don't want to pay him big money. Crowder's role would inevitably be reduced with the additions of Hayward, Tatum, and Brown. Zizic, I've got no clue about but he's not untouchable. All 3 together is a nobrainer for Irving. It's the 1st rounder that tilts the scales in favor of Cleveland.

Ultimately, I like the trade for both teams. Cleveland should benefit from adding Crowder and they get a pick to trade or use if LeBron leaves. Boston gets a younger, better point guard.

Love it for both teams

But from Clevelands perspective, brilliant

Possible #1 next season can make the transition from losing Lebron not a franchise killer

That's the glass half full outlook. But let's look at it from the other side.

Let's fast forward to June 2018. Let's say the following happens.

1) Nets finish with 28 wins and are drafting 6th in the 2018 draft

2) Cleveland loses to GS in 5 or 6 once again.

3) Lebron decides to move on.

4) Cleveland refuse to give IT the max that he is looking for. He gets it elsewhere

Yep see it the same way. Again with Cleveland in a position of having to deal the player they had leverage issues, I just can't believe Boston had to give up the pick too. But as we said it sill makes Boston better, and that was before they added Haywood and the Tatum.

Well 1, 2 and 3 would most likely happen with Irving

And 4, Irving would have opted out in 2 years and left Cleveland

So either way this is looking like probably a 1 year run unless they get a top 2 pick in the upcoming draft

Yes, but even getting a Top 5 pick for a player you're losing should help ease the pain of Lebron fucking them over again

Yeah I forgot about him but he is still only 6'4"

I mean they basically lost Bradley, IT, Crowder and got Hayward and Kyrie but the problem is Cleveland got 2 of those 3. Idk hard to determine who wins this trade now but bc of that pick I am leaning Cavs
Considering the pressure the Cavs were under--- a first time GM-- they did brilliantly

honestly- I thought there were 3 semi realistic possibilities-- (i) Porzingis and having to take Noah, (ii) Bledsoe and Jackson, (iii) Wiggins and cap filler.

The Cavs somehow pulled off exactly what they needed to do--- got a legit above average NBA starting point guard---- got a 3 and D wing on an amazing contract---- and got a hugely valuable draft pick. Not only that- but got a pretty good big man prospect as well.

It honestly really surprises me.

Some of the reports the last couple weeks were really weird- the fact Kyrie didnt talk to teammates during the playoffs was just strange. I didnt understand that at all- i had no clue that it happened- and i have no clue why it would have happened.

One of the most important things about the deal is something i have said--- Kyrie is going to realize the game gets harder when LeBron isnt on the court. Isiah is going to realize the game gets a lot easier when LeBron is on the court.

Not only that- but Isiah is gonna be surrounded by some knock down shooters- Korver, JR, Frye, Love- Crowder shot 40% from 3 last year........Isiah isnt going to get 27 pts a game next year- but he doesnt have to.....the Cavs offense with LeBron and Love and those shooters is so much better than anything he has ever played with before.

That pick becomes a huge chip too....if LeBron decides to leave- it jump starts the rebuild--- if LeBron commits- that pick could be used to bring in a big time piece. Gasol/Cousins both might be on the market at some point. Who knows who else could become avaliable.

The Cavs bench should be much improved.

honestly i didnt think there was any chance the CAvs could pull off a deal like this- esp. after i saw the George trade and the return Indiana got in a distressed asset sale.

Somehow the Cavs front office pulled it off.

Cavs/Celts is gonna be some must watch TV - i can tell ya that....lol......should be a REALLY REALLY fun season.

@Shanemansj13 I cant even imagine how pissed off Isiah is- and how motivated he will be this year.

Cavs front court of Bron, Love and TT will still gut Boston on the boards.

Boston needs to make another move to add to their front court. They still have the Lakers pick- and some intriguing young talent like Rozier, Yabusale....

This really breathes new life into the basketball season. I cant wait for October to roll around now.

this is for 2018 and beyond

the C's now have 4 guys picked in the top 5 on their roster (horford, irving, brown and tatum). defense is a concern as is rebounding, but they will find a way.

i love the move. brooklyns gonna be better this year too. pick was iffy.

I would be absolutely SHOCKED if that Brooklyn pick is not top 5.

They need to send Nick Gilbert back to the lotto!!! lol.

I cannot believe how bad Danny got hosed here.

It's an embarrassment.

The season is already over.

Even if you somehow make the finals, you earn the right to be swept by GS for 2 years and then fall back into irrelevancy as a mid tier east team.

Their ceiling is the 4th best team in the NBA (tops in the east, but behind GS, HOU and SA).
Absolutely pointless move.

Honestly,

I think the people who like this deal from the Celtics side are either:

A: overrating Kyrie
B: underrating the value of the Nets pick.

I totally get that Ainge and Boston fans did not view IT as a core player for their future. That being said, I think Crowder + the Nets pick + a contract would have been more than a fair price for a disgruntled star (not superstar) who was demanding a trade. The Celtics paid 150% of the market price.

While some are saying that this is a price the Celtics could afford to pay, I think those people are totally missing the big picture. The Celtics maybe could afford to pay that price to Indiana or Chicago. They chose not to. Instead, they overpaid their only real competition in the East and bailed the Cavs out of what had been a terrible off season until now.

People said the reason Indiana refused to deal PG to Cleveland or Boston was that they didn't want to send him to a rival. Well, Indiana wasn't a rival to either. Indiana sucks. LeBron may still choose to leave Cleveland next off season, but the odds are a lot greater that he stays now because of this deal. That is a horrific reality that Celtic fans must face.

This. The trade wasn't bad from either side, until the Nets' 2018 pick was involved. This trade has started making me analyze Ainge's tenure as a GM.

In 2008, he landed a gold mine in forming the Big 3 which netted them a title. But he could've likely thrown this package at Chicago for Butler, which Chicago was afforded the opportunity to be patient. Indiana, I'm sure would've jumped at the opportunity for this deal which would've allowed Boston to maintain a far superior player than Irving in George.

Instead, as you've mentioned, Ainge well overpaid for a disgruntled all star player in Irving, when he probably didn't need to. And the funny thing is, he's just a marginal upgrade from IT; I'm taking the salary that Irving has compared to IT's next season when he gets paid because the Celtics really don't have any wiggle room to add anymore players either.

this is a move for 2018 and beyond when lebrons in LA. its not for this year. this doesnt make them better than cleveland NOW. it does in about 10 months.

Even if they have the 5th worst record, it doesn't guarantee a top 5 pick.
That being said, the number 5 pick might easily end up not being as good as the number 8-9 pick.
It takes years to find out.

in 2-3 years when curry/durant are on the wrong side of 30?

the C's will have irving in his prime, a 30ish year old hayward, along with brown and tatum entering their primes.
