“It’s kind of nice when Kovy gets in there and scores the first goal,” Brodeur said. “It kind of goes into my hands to make a save and after that it’s a really good chance for us to win. It’s definitely nice to have that luxury of him scoring more often than not.”
Kovalchuk has scored on 10 of his 12 shootout attempts (83.3 percent) this season. Before this season, he was just 11-for-42 (26.2 percent) in the tiebreaker.
“I never was really good on that thing. Even last year I was struggling. But this year I talked to Marty actually and he told me a couple of secrets as a goalie, what angles I should take to give me more options and it’s working.”
Kovy has been a machine in the shootouts. I also love that Marty (who has been an absolute beast as of late) at this point in his career is willing to divulge goaltending advice to help his teammates score.
