And judging by his TOs and PER you could make a strong case that the Lakers would be better if he was not running the point and stepping back and letting others play.

His PER is 12.64, of the other starters on this list only Rose (10.61) and Irving are below 20 (18.2)...MELO has a PER of 23.92.

All that being said it is 4 games back so let's see where he peaks after this injury.

For once, I will agree with you on 1 point - I don't like him running the PG position. However, since he has been back he has been shooting very selectively and trying to get others involved as much as possible. That's not being a ball hog.

If your definition of ball hog is one who takes every shot no, he is not being a ball hog. But if your definition of ball hog is somebody who holds the ball a lot then yes, he is.


I went a little deeper on my theory.

His assist % (% of teammate FGs he assisted) is a career high at 40.3%. He has never assisted more than 30%.

His career assist to turn over ratio 1.56 to 1. This year it is 1.125 to 1. Even if it improves to his career average it is still pretty bad and most likely better that he is not running the point.

I am starting to think that Kobe is fully healthy or as healthy as he is going to be* and his increase in TO to assist ratio is due to his increased usage. Just like the more shots a player takes the lower their FG% will become so has Kobe's assist to TO ratio.

This is Kobe, and this is the Lakers advanced tank strategy who after 2014 will not have another pick until 2016**.


*HGH is a wonderful drug....er I mean wow science has come a long way.

**This really makes a ton of sense. Kobe is rewarded both in monetary rewards and in stats to end his career. The Lakers should miss the playoffs in a very difficult West and be in the lottery. Fans still buy seats to see the Kobe show and Pau is pissed off because he knows this is a sinking ship strategy that he receives no benefit from.
