Outside of 4-5 teams, yes. The East is awful and there are 4 playoff spots open for any shitty team that makes an upgrade or two to take over. They have cap space to sign a max player to add to Melo and their first rounder if anything could be used as trade bait.

They can't trade next years pick. They can use the pick and trade who they pick but they already traded the 2016 pick so they can't trade 2015

That's basically what I said in my post following the one you quoted. The Cavs made the pick then waited a while before finalizing the trade with Minnesota and I could see NY doing something similar.

Getting Okafor is a big if. They will probably attract a big time free agent or two, but they need a lot more than that before they start to contend, even in the east.

Okafor has such a limited upside. Why not go all in with Towns?

No way. Okafor is the consensus first pick in the draft this year for a reason. He already has skills that very few CURRENT NBA centers posses. He has size, quick footwork and even a decent ability to pass for a big guy. He has the fundamentals down.

Towns is more of a project that a completely rebuilding team would take on.

That's an interesting fantasy here, but considering the history of mismanagement, I think players will be cautious in regards to New York. Phil Jackson might be a big name, but they have a history of big name that turned out to be failures. They might get better, but there is no way in hell, they will b contenders next year. That's not going to happen any more then the Phoenix Suns stops using ponchos for their uniform

Let me clarify one the "contend" part of my post. I meant contend for a playoff spot, not title, lol.

Think they'll be better next year but I doubt you see them in contention next year even in the weaker East.

That's an important clarification. Not hard as you say to contend for an EC playoff spot. The Knicks could have almost $35mil to spend this summer. If they can bring in the right talent to compliment Melo, then they could be there contending for a playoff spot.

Good. Because you're not really going out on a limb there. Hell, they were suppose to be "in contention" for that this year before that roster and the triangle blew up in their face

Knicks are far away from even coming close to winning the East. Might make playoffs but won't go far. Team is Shot and Melo killed them.

Thank God my Bulls didn't land him. Gasol ,Gibson and Mirotic(who we wouldn't have if we signed Melo) are killing it for us. Butler is leader for MVP. Love how the Bulls look. Just have to stay healthy

A lot of this will depend on how Dolan reacts. They're still selling out and maybe they get lucky and the Rangers have another run to fill Dolan's pockets with playoff money. As much as Dolan has interfered with the Knicks he doesn't involve himself at all with the hockey end. If he stays out of it, they get a good pick and can attract a key free agent they can complete next year. It's the East, it won't take much to complete

Not as much but he still refuses to replace Sather even though he should have been fired about 10 years ago. Sather is his Isiah Thomas of hockey.

Looks like Porzingis is the real deal. Adding Lopez, Afflalo and Williams were decent moves, but I don't think they realized how good Kristaps would be right away.

I think NY should be buyers at the deadline. They need a PG and bench help.

Knicks are still bad but better then last year. Knicks have no shot to do anything in the East. At least they might of got the draft pick right.

Knicks aren't anything special. They aren't really competing in East. The East belongs to Cleveland.. then there are like 5 teams that could go to the ECF and lose to the Cavs. It's a joke. I will give Knicks credit, that foreigner looks like he will be a nice player in the NBA.

1) They will win the lottery. NY getting the first pick would be the NBA's wet dream. Okafor+Melo could be a very solid 1-2 punch.

2) The East is horrible. Any player that hits free agency and wants an easier path to the playoffs will go East with the Knicks as a desirable destination with Phil, Melo and that #1 pick + market size.

3) They have the money to sign 1 max deal and then add another solid role player or two to put around Melo and their pick.

This is just a prediction of course, but I bet they make a couple splashes this summer... they're in a rare position where they are tanking, but have a star player and could lure in free agents with their cap space this summer.

In the meantime, let's just enjoy NY sucking. Cuz right now... god damn, they're dog shit.
