1) They will win the lottery. NY getting the first pick would be the NBA's wet dream. Okafor+Melo could be a very solid 1-2 punch.

2) The East is horrible. Any player that hits free agency and wants an easier path to the playoffs will go East with the Knicks as a desirable destination with Phil, Melo and that #1 pick + market size.

3) They have the money to sign 1 max deal and then add another solid role player or two to put around Melo and their pick.

This is just a prediction of course, but I bet they make a couple splashes this summer... they're in a rare position where they are tanking, but have a star player and could lure in free agents with their cap space this summer.

In the meantime, let's just enjoy NY sucking. Cuz right now... god damn, they're dog shit.

You have to believe they will make big runs at Marc Gasol and Wes Matthews forsure.

They may be one of the teams to try and pry Butler from the Bulls as well.

Yup. They will also probably target Dragic, Jackson & Rondo at point as well. There are some solid FA's out there next year.

I agree. They will most likely draft Okafor out of Duke & he's just what they need. A defender and rebounder who reminds me a little bit of Mourning.

They will get a max guy to pair up with Melo and they need a PG plus some role players. If they can do that they could be in the mix in the EC.

They do have the Eastern conference being a steaming pile of garbage working for them. But that is about it.

Even if they get lucky in the draft, rookies don't add wins in this league. Quite the opposite in fact.

And unless Phil is EXTREMELY short-sighted, he isn't going to hand out a bunch of contracts next season to guys like Wes Matthews and Rondo. You put those two on the Knicks and not only are they not likely a playoff team next year, but it completely limits what they can do in the future because moving forward they then dont have the cap space to make a big splash move.

The Knick's are in the same position as the Laker's. They can either add mid - tier guys and hope to be a middling team in the near future and have little to no chance of competing for a championship over the next 3 to 7 years.....or they need to take their lumps for a couple of seasons and hope they find an offseason that has a legit star and a solid #3 player that are both willing to sign in the same offseason as part of a package type deal.

Both franchises need to go into this offseason with the idea that they come out of it very, very good (as in a similar offseason as Cleveland just had) or they have to come out of it just as bad as they are now. They can't commit future money to middling players that suck up cap space and limit what they can do in future years. That is just how the NBA works now.

Got to love the balls to say "As early as"... which means if they suck next year, he still isn't wrong. Knicks suck. One of the most irrelevant franchises in the NBA. They only get coverage on TV because they are in New York. MSG isn't Mecca.. it's garbage. The whole franchise is a joke. Huge market.. and no titles in 40 years?

Melo plays 0 defense. 0. Knicks wont matter till they get a player that plays both ways.

Yes.

Listen, young Multi-Millionaires love the Nightlife.

The LA and Zoo York markets have plenty of appeal now that the money is there.

The Knicks have Melo, a ton of cap and the Legend of Phil Jackson.

They might not get Love,M Gasol or Rondo.

But, R Jackson, Monroe, or Dragic are possible.

Don't know if that makes them a Contender.

But, it gets them out of the gutter.

The Knicks should take Karl - Anthony Towns number 1. Reminds me of a longer, more athletic LaMarcus Aldridge.

That's an interesting fantasy here, but considering the history of mismanagement, I think players will be cautious in regards to New York. Phil Jackson might be a big name, but they have a history of big name that turned out to be failures. They might get better, but there is no way in hell, they will b contenders next year. That's not going to happen any more then the Phoenix Suns stops using ponchos for their uniform

A lot of this will depend on how Dolan reacts. They're still selling out and maybe they get lucky and the Rangers have another run to fill Dolan's pockets with playoff money. As much as Dolan has interfered with the Knicks he doesn't involve himself at all with the hockey end. If he stays out of it, they get a good pick and can attract a key free agent they can complete next year. It's the East, it won't take much to complete

Outside of 4-5 teams, yes. The East is awful and there are 4 playoff spots open for any shitty team that makes an upgrade or two to take over. They have cap space to sign a max player to add to Melo and their first rounder if anything could be used as trade bait.

Keep in mind the Cavs used their first pick to land Love. Sure it isn't working out great for them, but they did go from non-playoff team to playoff team. NY can sign a couple solid players and trade the first rounder for a talent that can help them win sooner. Not saying it will happen, but if they play their cards right they could be in good shape after this offseason. Melo's "window" is getting shorter.

Also, disagree with you saying adding Rondo and Matthews doesn't make them a playoff team. Adding two quality guards alongside Melo would make them at least a 7-8 seed in the East this year.
