If you were the GM of a franchise, (considering that they both were top 5 picks) which of these two DEs would you draft first?

For one season? Justin Smith. Long is obviously the more valuable "Long term" (Pun intended) commodity (5+ years) 'cause he's much younger.

It all depends on the defensive scheme the team is playing... I doubt Long would be a good fit as a 3-4 DE. He is definitely better at 4-3... So if 3-4, Smith.. If 4-3, Long

I think you missed the point of the question.. Unless you would draft a 1st round, top pick for only one season then release him

Justin Smith is the better player but I'd go with Long for reasons already discussed.

If they were the same age this would be a different discussion. Long based on his age.

if they are the same age, i'd take smith if i run a 3-4. long if i run a 4-3. very simple choice and not even worthy of a discussion.
if you are an expansion franchise with en empty roster...i'd take smith because i like the 3-4 better...more versatile.

next...

Long was a 5 tech at Virginia.

The point of the OP's question was this...

Both Jake Long and Justin Smith are top 5 draft picks and you are a GM for an NFL team. Based on those facts who would you draft, Smith or Long?... Your reply was for one season, Smith for long term commitment, Long... Do you really see any GM, drafting a top 5 pick for ONE SEASON??? That was my point to you

Do you really see any GM drafting a 32 year old DE in the top 5?

Dude... This is a what if scenario type of question... not a now question... It's a what if both Long and Smith are coming into the draft... What if you're a GM... Who would you pick... Maybe you should re-read the OP
