FX has announced that Justified will return in 2023 but will be reset in Detroit with an entirely new supporting cast. It will be based on Elmore Leonard's novel "City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit." However, despite Leonard writing the novel, and separately creating Raylen Givens, Raylen does not appear in that novel. Therefore, the source material will be adapted for Givens as the main character.

I was a huge fan of Justified. I'll certainly give this a look-see and hope that it doesn't try to out do the original and 'jump the shark'.

I heard about this a few months back. I have been rewatching the original series on Hulu to bring myself back up to speed.

Season 3 Episode 3 now.

I don't know if shoehorning Givens into a story in Detroit is a good idea.

The story wasn't written for that character, but they are forcing it anyway. Feels like how Legolas was written into the Hobbit, but worse.

Are you familiar with Elmore Leonard's work?

Somewhat.

It's accurate that City Primeval has an entirely different protagonist who is a detective in Detroit, and has no connection whatsoever to Justifed, yes?

I know Givens was a very popular character and they would like to keep riding that, rather than start over. It's a worrying sign to me. I loved Justified. I worry about diluting it.

Not a fan of massive changes to source material, but where I am unfamiliar with the source material I can't really critique. Either way, I love the show so I will be watching the new one.

I thought I read in the thread that the book was not about Givens, but they are adding him. If that is not the case then....none?

The post about the announcement said it was based on City Primeval, not the book you posted.

from the sounds of it, you could plug Raylan into Cruz's role, no problem.

This is early EL crime fiction: 1980. Set in his home city of Detroit, it concerns an Oklahoma lowlife named Clement Mansell and the police detective, Ray Cruz, who is out to end Mansell's career, literally. As the subtitle suggests, this is high noon in Detroit, not the beginning of a protracted court battle and an endless series of appeals.
