Pitchers generally don't get deals that can hamstring you because a guy can throw a fastball and blow his arm out at any age at any time.The Mariner do have the flexibility to sign Soto long-term. But don't have the flexibility to sign Soto, JRod, and Gilbert. We are realistically talking a one billion dollars....at least. We'd lose at least one of those and most likely two.
If the team wants to win, they have the flexibility to retain all of those guys.
I don't even know when they have to address Julio's contract unless they make a move now and try to sign him cheap. I don't think he'd even hit free agency until like 2029.
Logan Gilbert doesn't hit free agency until 2028.
Juan Soto doesn't hit free agency until 2025.
These are guys you could retain without hamstringing you to 3 guys. Also given how long until they hit free agency, it's not something we'd have to address now and you could stagger the contracts to make it work.
