The Mariner do have the flexibility to sign Soto long-term. But don't have the flexibility to sign Soto, JRod, and Gilbert. We are realistically talking a one billion dollars....at least. We'd lose at least one of those and most likely two.
Pitchers generally don't get deals that can hamstring you because a guy can throw a fastball and blow his arm out at any age at any time.

If the team wants to win, they have the flexibility to retain all of those guys.

I don't even know when they have to address Julio's contract unless they make a move now and try to sign him cheap. I don't think he'd even hit free agency until like 2029.

Logan Gilbert doesn't hit free agency until 2028.

Juan Soto doesn't hit free agency until 2025.

These are guys you could retain without hamstringing you to 3 guys. Also given how long until they hit free agency, it's not something we'd have to address now and you could stagger the contracts to make it work.

That is even worse than the Jamal Adams trade.
It's worse than the Heathcliff Slocumb trade.
Please don't mention Jamal Adams here.

Just thinking about the fact that we gave up two first round picks for a box safety who can't cover, or stay healthy, and tied up a bunch of cap space to him gives me a migraine.

That trade will go down as one of the worst in Seattle sports history. I don't think even Dipoto is capable of making a trade that bad.

Who would you be willing to give up to acquire Soto from the Nats? Keep in mind that we would only get two years from him before he signs $50 bazillion contract with the Yanks or Dodgers.

And maybe, with the team rolling, now is not the time to rock the boat. However, I still remember how pissed off Piniella was in 2001 that the front office didn't add any players at the deadline, despite the teams rolling toward a 116-win season. And it turned out he was right to be pissed when the team ran out of steam in October.

So, would you trade Kelenic and Kirby for two years of Soto? It would be hard for Washington to turn down that deal and I'm not sure if any other team could top that offer. How about Kelenic and Brash. That might be a bit easier on our collective baseball souls.

They should make some moves to improve the team.
A better backup catcher.
A couple more reliable arms to add to the pen.
A better utility guy to get Frazier and DeeMo out of the lineup.
And, the Holy Grail: a mid-rotation starter. Not a backend starter, which is what they typically settle for, but a true mid-rotation starter. One of Cincinnati's guys, or Pablo Lopez. Frankie Montas would be great too but there isn't much chance of Oakland trading him to a division rival.
I am willing to involve anyone not named Julio for Soto.

My only other preference would be to keep two of Gilbert, Kirby, Hancock. Obviously one has to go in any deal but I prefer not two.

Other then that I am open to whatever it takes.

Prospects are prospects, no one we have in the system is gonna be another Julio. I can pretty much guarantee that right now. Even if its only for two years, I am taking that risk.

Marte I dont think should Seattle imo. I think he is someone you use to take this team to the next level whether that be in a Soto deal or a front line starter.

The Dodgers traded two top 50 prospects and more last year for two months of Max Scherzcer and possibly 1 year and 2 months of Trea Turner. Obviously Soto is a different animal but teams do this when they want to win.

If trust Jerry an co to build up the farm like they have then trust that they will draft and replenish some of the names you trade away.

I dont necessarily trust Jerry to make this kind of trade but ill give him credit for buidling up the farm like he was. But its been 7 years, its time to make some big moves.

But problem is there is zero chance he will sign an extension. It’s no different than ARod in terms of he young enough where he has to test free agency.
I would rather...take a pass...and have julio..RF...and get ..a cf...

It has taken a lifetime to get here, I’ll be bummed if JeDi sells the farm for this kid. The Mariners are sitting pretty with prospects and cap space to do whatever they want, please don’t put it all in one basket. I saw an article today that mentioned the M’s as a strong suitor for Whitt Merrifield and not for the ridiculous haul KC would have expected a year or two ago. I still stand by starting pitching and second base as priority, Ketel Marte would be my #1 target in the field but Whitt works too.
I definitely would like to see the M's upgrade at 2nd. I don't think Merrifield is it though. Basically another Frazier this year. Also agree about picking up a starter for depth. After only letting Kirby throw 50 pitches yesterday in a game he was dominating, I don't have faith that the M's won't shut him down at some point.

I'd really like to see us get Luis Castillo, but a legit upgrade at 2B is probably more important. These last 2 series really highlighted how badly we need another threat in the lineup.

They can have those three guys, but if everything stays the same they will have to choose between Gilbert and Kirby. Say they get Soto you can have 3 $30 million dollar guys but everyone else has to be less….plus France is going to be $20 a year. Stanton and Co have the ability to cross the luxury tax threshold but I’ll have to see it before I could say. IMO, send (preferably not Marte) but send Hancock, Ford, then Kelenic, Lewis, Trammell and White to get Soto and Corbin. Or in an fantasy level the M’s get Soto and a decent pitcher from the 3rd team in the deal and deals that same group plus other prospects from the third team.

This move would be about roster construction building. FA’s don’t come here, so you have to have prospect capital to fill in holes which is a Soto type deal is a year ahead of schedule. Best possible scenario is the M’s play out the next two year with their guys, in 2024 sign Ohtani and trade for Soto in 2024. And the last 2 months fall where they may.
