MLB.com has a proposal for the M's to get Soto:

Kirby, Hancock, Kelenic, Ford, Marte, and Juan Pinto.

Just hell fucking no. Soto's great, but that is just absolutely gutting your now and your near future for 2 years of 1 guy.
And Soto's never going to sign a long term deal with a 3rd or 4th tier team. It's why he turned down the Nats' offer- they weren't going to put anyone good around him anytime soon. Why stay if he can get the same big (or bigger) money elsewhere and the chance at a title.

But problem is there is zero chance he will sign an extension. It’s no different than ARod in terms of he young enough where he has to test free agency.
Right, I’m saying that’s the only way it’s worth it we are giving the Nationals a ridiculous haul. That said, likely not gonna happen because of that. My guess is the ask won’t reflect the lack of time spent in any destination before he hits free agency. No extension then no ridiculous haul IMO. Reasonable deal with a few top prospects sure……Washington won’t go for it.

When I see a deal like that it makes you think about what else that could get you and for how long would you have what’s coming back. I’d rather trade a fraction of that for Ketel Marte, fill our 2nd base need with a top tier player, and still have chips to either trade or continue to build up the young guys. This Soto thing is out of control.

If I’m Jerry at most I’m offering Hancock, Ford and some other dudes. An over looked option is offer Haniger because when he walks this off-season they could get compensation. But problem is as good as Soto is Jerry can’t sell the farm for him. Jerry hasn’t been able to attract free agents so he needs prospect to trade. They need a starter and a RF. With some of the proposed trade deals that means they only get Soto, which is good but as I’ve stated in another thread, come September the rotation will have 3 pitchers.

OK, but the M's are in position to be much better than a 3rd or 4th tier team. Julio, Gilbert, Ray, France... Their window is just starting to open.

Which is why it's a bad idea to give away 4 huge pieces plus more for 1 guy.

That's why I said if you're even entertaining the thought of shipping away a big haul, you might as well shoot your shot for Ohtani. He brings the elite bat AND the needed big rotation piece, with the prospect of being resignable here.

I agree. Though I doubt the Ms can stay competitive for a sustained period of time even with those pieces. Trade away 2 or 3 of them for a 2-year window with one good OF / bat, and it’s even harder.

Yep. His agent is Scott Boras. He's going to test free agency like all of Boras' clients do, regardless of how much money a team throws at him.

That is even worse than the Jamal Adams trade.
It's worse than the Heathcliff Slocumb trade.

It has taken a lifetime to get here, I’ll be bummed if JeDi sells the farm for this kid. The Mariners are sitting pretty with prospects and cap space to do whatever they want, please don’t put it all in one basket. I saw an article today that mentioned the M’s as a strong suitor for Whitt Merrifield and not for the ridiculous haul KC would have expected a year or two ago. I still stand by starting pitching and second base as priority, Ketel Marte would be my #1 target in the field but Whitt works too.

Heard a very reasonable proposal for Montas on a podcast yesterday. I'd be ecstatic if we could get him for 3 prospects. 1 was our young SS who isn't Noelvi, and 2 low level arms.

The one constant piece in getting Soto from what I've been seeing from the trade proposals involves Marte. Then a lot of the proposals also involves Kirby and Gilbert. Look, if the M's are anywhere near a WS contender, I'd say go for it... but they haven't even make the playoffs for over 2 decades. The question is do we want to clean out the farm just to make the playoffs? And just for the next 2.5 years since it's unknown if Soto will even sign a long term deal?

Tough choice this year.

A better trade would be Hancock , Kirby, and Marte + for Ohtani
