I don't even think it's about being close to the players. Mike Singletary was close to the players. He's just a great gameplanner. Our players are consistently in the right places to make plays and he knows exactly how to get the most of his players on the field.

Singletary is the NFL of equivalent of what Dusty Baker was to the SF Giants: both are great motivators but when it comes to the X's and O's of the game, both were lacking, and in the case of Singletary, severely inept.

Besides Walsh, the only other coach the Niners had that did anything really substantial was Seifert with his 2 SB's. I think Seifert was underrated as a coach and albeit while I agree with the OP on this thread, it's been proven that just because you inherit a powerhouse team doesn't necessarily equate to winning a championship the following season.

One thing that I don't think was mentioned was that Harbaugh had told his players before the game started this past Sunday that if his players were to retaliate on the Lions, he would personally "kill" them.

Unlike Singletary and Nolan, this team doesn't commit a lot of penalties, turnovers are kept to a minimum, and this team plays hard but not dirty, as exemplified by our defense. The one thing that is lacking is the deep ball but I heard a KNBR announced use the analogy of Alex Smith and the deep ball with a young hitter who develops power later on in his career - it's gonna come, it's just a matter of time...

Oooh! Can I play?

No to Mike Shannahan, yes to Jimmy Raye? (or just head coaches?)

Good one, I think any known coach can be used. More points if you keep it to HC's.

No to Mike Tomlin, yes to Jim Beam!

I've said this before, but Harbaugh's creativity in the run game is amazing. Singletary viewed the run game as a test of manhood and repeatedly plowed straight into the line for one yard. Harbaugh has so many different run plays that it is amazing. Smith is audibling at the line for running plays. How many times have the Niners caught Detroit with that wham trap?

The defense reminds me of USC in the early 2000's. They are hyper-athletic, bend but don't break, and ball-hawk. By the time the second half rolls around, offensive WR's start getting alligator arms.

All-in-all...phenomenal coaching.

I think Harbaugh is one of the best football coaches (not necessarily NFL coaches) that has coached in the past decade or two.

This team reminds me of the 1970 team. A stout defense led by a stellar linebacker that really improved its offense with the addition of a new group of wide receivers that added to a solid running game. All led by a no nonsense coach.

Got into an argument at the gym with a couple of guys having a conversation i over heard saying Singletary is the one responsible for the 49ers success. He said he thought Harbaugh inherited what Singletary started. Too bad he doesn't understand game planning and how to manage his players.

LOL!! They were right - Harbaugh DID inherit what Singletary started, but what Singletary started wasn't going to become THIS!

It was really evident in the 4th quarter at Lambeau last week. Fangio's 3-man rush was decimated by Rodgers for an easy touchdown drive. Now, Singletary's adjustment would have been to pull the defense together on the sideline and tell them to try harder. Fangio, instead, rushed 4 and 5 every down on the next drive as his adjustment and the result was they stopped the Pack and won the game.

Killin' me!! So fricken true! I believe Singletary was the first NFL HC to request a 20 second basketball timeout - I'll never forget that.

Giving credit where credit is due, Singletary had the right message(s) - The "I want winners" and the "It's about the team" and the "...cannot coach with them..."

All of those and more were spot-on messages, but Singletary did not have the coaching aptitude to turn those words into wins, and he never would have IMO. That is where Harbaugh takes over and, although early, is thus far proving to be an elite HC in this league.
