not really sure its an upgrade over delmas. I'd say they have the same talent level, its just that Delmas was a little better in pass coverage, while ihedigbo is a little better in run coverage.

This just tells me he will be dropping into box more than Quin.

I ain't thrilled. Cut just 2 seasons ago, looked OK last year, but another guy who would be better as depth than as a starter. At least he doesn't get hurt every year. I do not see him as Delmas' talent level at all, but he's somewhat reliable. Fine with our cap situation as a one-to-two year low-end guy, but not really a difference-maker. No salary released yet but I suspect he came relatively cheap.

Louis Delmas '13--8 games, 7 started, 64 tackles, 9 PD, 3int
James Ihedigbo '13--16 games, 16 started, 100 tackles, 11 PD, 3int, 1FF, 2fum rec

Yeah it may not be an upgrade talent level, but were getting a guy that consistently stays healthy. As he know Austin's system. I think thisbis a good signing as it affords us the opportunity to develop a young replacement.

but not really a difference
He had the same impact as Delmas, except he actually stayed on the field. That's something or secondary severely lacked.

I think he is referring to Ihedbigo being named a starter in NE, getting benched for poor play and then being cut.

Personally -- IMO, it was the best option available, as he knows Austin's system already. Is he a difference maker the defense sorely needs? No. But he is a high character guy, who can help guys pick up the defense Austin is putting in, in Detroit.

I thought Delmas was decent when he was healthy, practiced, and played. My biggest thing with Delmas was that he seemed to be out of position too much which contributed to big plays. I think he was going for the big play, which is nice when it payed off, and can be a disaster when it doesn't.

I think we're seeing a guy who could play adequately on a team with a good defense, but not a guy who will be able to raise the level of play in a poor secondary. They needed someone to start and this was what was left after the good players were signed for starter salaries. If under $3MM per year it's a good signing.

We need players that fit the scheme and he was the obvious choice. I like the idea that he knows the defense and I'm sure that's one reason why they brought him in.

For what it's worth he was far more productive than Delmas last year vs. both the run and the pass. If he plays at last year's level then he's actually a pretty significant upgrade. That's the question on everyone's mind, though: was last year an aberration, or has he finally put it together in a defense that suits him?

Like you said, though, given his history and age, he's only temporary. Hopefully we find a safety this year in the 1st four rounds who we can work in this year and maybe next to take over once 'Dig's contract is up, or sooner if he's not cutting it.

Right, and Micro is referring to him being named a starter in Baltimore and finishing the year as the 16th ranked safety in the league last year- far better than Delmas.

I like the signing but i never liked the flying missle delmas who missed on many occasions and gave up big plays because of bad angles....dont even get me started on his injuries....plus this guy knows the system...

His offer from Detroit before was 2 years 3.5 million (not sure what his actual contract is). If Baltimore is willing to let him walk for that little amount of money -- I'm guessing they aren't expecting to see a year like 2013.

You never know though. Character, health and knowledge of the new defensive system is an upgrade for Detroit. Talent wise -- There is a reason why he was a FA and Baltimore let him walk, while Delmas was signed by Miami right away. It isn't because Ihedbigo is an upgrade.
