Will this new CBA really help out the struggling markets (and make no mistake, this lockout was mainly to help make the struggling teams more viable). Sure, a $44 million cap floor helps off the hop, but once revenues start going up again, the cap floor will rise and these teams will be in trouble again.

I think relocation becomes a much more viable option then. At that point if teams still haven't figured it out, with all of the help they have received, it's time to chalk it up as a loss and find a new market.

and they lose an expansion market

/btw ... did expansion revenue end up being included in HRR or is it still all for the owners

heh, i'd like to believe that, but the lengths the NHL has gone to keep the coyotes in phoenix are outrageous

On that note, Mike Sunnucks of the Phoenix Business Journal was on Bob McCown's Primetime Sports yesterday and basically said he has no clue whether or not Jamison will close the Coyotes deal by the end of the month.

A fan bending over to tie his shoes and a dildo laser sighting his ass.
I heard they were only doing that in Tampa.

I don't have season tickets, so unsurprisingly I didn't get an email from the Flyers.

Oddly enough I did get one from the League. Here it is:

DEAR FRIEND,

MY NAME IS DR GARY BETMEN. I AM WRITING IN RESPECT OF A OWNER MR JERRY MOYES OF TEAM PHOENIX COYOTES WHO PERISHED IN A BANKRUPTCY IN 2009.

SINCE THE DEMISE OF THIS CUSTOMER I HAS PERSONALLY WATCHED WITH GREAT INTEREST TO SEE THE NEXT OF OWNING BUT ALL HAS PROVED ABORTIVE AS NONE HAVE APPROACHED TO CLAIM THE TEAM PHOENIX COYOTES. ON THIS NOTE I HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE YOU BECOME THE NEXT OF OWNING AS LEAGUE POLICIES DO NOT ALLOW SUCH TEAMS TO GO UNCLAIMED FOR MORE THAN FOUR YEARS.

I SEEK YOUR CONSENT TO BE THE NEXT OF OWNING SO THAT THE TEAM MAY BE MOVED SWIFTLY. I WILL NOT FAIL TO BRING TO YOUR NOTICE THAT THIS BUSINESS IS HITCH FREE SAFE AND LEGAL. HOWEVER, IT IS REQUIRED THAT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THIS TEAM VALUED AT $200M (TWO HUNDRED MILLION US DOLLARS) I SHALL FIRST REQUIRE YOU TO BE DEPOSITING $25 MILLION US DOLLARS WITH THE CITY OF GLENDALE TO SECURE YOUR TRANSACTION.

PLEASE WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS LETTER PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS MAIL BOX INCLUDING YOUR MOST CONFIDENTIAL ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER FOR QUICK COMMUNICATION.

YOUR FRIEND
GARY BETMEN
(ABSOLUTELY NOT JERRY WEIERS)

It depends on how they manage the situation from year to year. If they are smart and manage the cap more responsibly things will be fine. If they act like a few drunken sailors on weekend leave with a few extra bucks in their pockets we will be right back here again next time.

How many cities in more 'traditional' hockey-frendly markerts are there that don't already have an established minor league franchise? How many of those could support both an NHL and a minor?

If these teams can't make a go of it where they are, then maybe the only answer is to fold up & shrink the size of the NHL.

Not that I'm happy about it: Just sayin... :(

Boss, if we use history as a guide, it will be the latter rather than the former.

Just throwing it out there, do you think say Milwaukee and Seattle would draw better crowds than Phoenix and Miami?

you relocate Phoenix to Seattle and the owners lose a potential $150 million expansion fee

ive said it many times ... i think we'll sooner see a fold the Coyotes and expand to Seattle scenario

I have no clue on what kind of NHL market Milwaukee could be ... supporting minor league teams (and paying minor hockey ticket prices) is a different animal

I agree that was just a random cold weather city that I chose. I know Wisconsin likes their hockey, and they do have an NBA franchise so I figured it was a possibility.

I could see the fold and expand thing happening as well.

Might make more sense not to burn a year of an ELC with this news...

TSNBobMcKenzie: If, as expected, 6-game rule is adopted for underage juniors, it's just for this season. Would go back to 10 next year.

I think another factor is the teams that are working closer to the floor than the cap, why are they doing it? Are they a team in an area that's cheap to run a business and just fielding a team for no reason other than to bring in concession and parking revenue? Are they treating hockey as a 49 dollar BluRay player on Black Friday or do they actually care? It would be great if the league as a whole would discourage that kind of behavior.

The cap floor is welcome for the Blue Jackets right now because they are going to be very lean this year, they are starting more than that amount in the hole. It's a tough balance because a long playoff run could get them closer to even and make next year start on even footing. But they in no way can afford to ice a team that will be even close to competitive. If the CBA truly favors teams with trouble and doesn't convince them to stay crappy and get welfare (Phoenix), then it may be okay here.

The Jackets proved last year that they will spend money. The problem is they have Howson deciding on who to spend it on. Carter was one of the biggest mistakes in league history, followed closely by trading Nash. I think hiring JD shows they are willing to take another stab at it. They just have to ride out the storm that the cancelled ASG created.

Nevermind

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Important to remember that players haven't ratified the deal yet. They're expected to hold their vote Thursday-Friday

Double edit: @Real_ESPNLeBrun: Update from NHLPA: vote is now expected to be held Friday-Saturday, no longer Thursday-Friday
