Yeah, batting averages do show a nice correlation, since they're related to both OBP and slugging, so those numbers are sufficient to suggest my numbers aren't far off.

OMG, folks. We're too late. Baseball has already done it. They've turned D'stone into a robot. NO!!!! Let's try something here...

Love is more important than science.

This is the big question for me...if this had been a playoff game, how would you feel? I'd say the whole country would be up in arms. Well, postseason and regular season games should be called correctly. Get it right. I don't care what it takes, get it right. That said, at the very least this needs to be instituted in the post season. Because if this play happened then (and don't say "it'd never happen!" because human error DOES happen all the time), it'd be not just disgusting, it'd be a travesty.

You make some good points, but I just don't feel this post is dramatic enough to get them across.

Also, what the fuck is a playoff game? We're talking about baseball, not hockey.

[Insert a quip about how Pittsburgh suddenly cares about baseball here]

I kid, I kid. Washington is just a season or two away from the bandwagon being fired up. ;)

19 years of futility will slow down any fanbase

Similar things have happened in the playoffs and to my team (look up Jeffery Maier, yeah its not exactly the same but it was bad). I was angry like most people would be but I am still kind of against replay in baseball.

I want the call right but I do not want the games stretched even longer. Beyond the result a sport has to be fun to watch. If they bring replay to plays at the plate and a year later there is a horrible call at third, whichever team got hurt is going to bitch about why there isn't a replay option for third too.

I also would never be in favor of replay in the post-season but not the regular season. If they do it, do it for both.

As flawed as it is, and as bad as some of the mistakes I have seen over my lifetime, I am OK with MLB letting the people on the field have the last say.

corollary question: would it have been such a huge deal if it was in the 3rd inning instead of the 19th.

the answer is.... challenge flags. each team has 1 or 2 to use per game.
that wouldn't take any more time that the manager rushing out to make an ass of himself.
(oops, I've watched Sweet Lou for too many years)

But that is far more entertaining than watching an umpire watch a monitor.

Well at least we can all look at the bright side. At least it wasn't one of MLB's big payroll marquee teams that got screwed.

Lol Comeds.... the funny part is that when you and I were kids, in the 70's, the Pirates were one of the big, marquee teams...the Bucs and the Big Red Machine had to battle for the pennant just about every year... My how times have changed...

Any pen fan who was angry over this call is subject to ref complaining in Flyer/Penguin GNTs

I'll never forget my first baseball game. It was a Pirates-Cubs game at Wrigley, towards the end of the season. I was 8 or 9 years old, a huuuuuuuge Cubs fan, I watched every game I could on WGN and thought Ryne Sanberg and Mark Grace shit rainbows. I was so excited to finally see a game live at Wrigley, and it was a night game too (on a school night!!). The game ended up going into extra innings, and in the 11th my mom and dad decided it was too late and we needed to go. They pretty much had to drag me up the stairs, through the concourse, and out the gates. We were walking out of Wrigley onto the sidewalk when a huge roar erupted from the crowd, and I flipped out. I didn't know what happened, but I knew we had missed something incredible. The next day I watched the highlights, and it turned out George Bell had knocked out a homer to win the game just as we stepped out of the stadium. I think that game might be at the root of why I grind my teeth at night.

That's a good reason in my book.

baseball isn't going to make sweeping changes like a computer calling balls/strikes.
That's the thing. It could be secretly implemented as suggested earlier (with a light inside the ump's mask specifying ball or strike by a computer, the ump calls it), and the viewer wouldn't even notice. They might notice that the calls are becoming more accurate...what a bad, unnoticeable sweeping change. :)

They could also install little robot arms under the umps protective vests that give them vicious purple nurples if they get a call wrong.
