I frankly don't trust Jonathan Rose any more than I trust Davie. He has a lot better ball skills though, so if he has his technique figured out and can be in position, he'll make those plays Davie has proven time and time again he can't make.

I've seen Rose get beaten BADLY before, so I just don't know if it'll get any better. Maybe Chris Jones really is the answer.

At least Kalu doesn't get beat consistently. He's made some pretty decent plays on the ball.

Before the season I really didn't think we'd be having a discussion about the quality of our DB's at this point.

I don't know if it's coaching or if the well finally ran dry on good secondary coaches with Brian Stewart. Maybe Stewart sucks.

Is it scheme or talent as to why our secondary is looking shaky

Jonathan just tackles piss poorly.

Thinks he's gonna shoulder everyone to the ground.

I'll say it again...Davie is almost always in position. You can't teach that. I'm certain that the coaches are going to work with him a ton on what to do to make the play. Davie's situation is fixable. You can fix technique. You can't fix slow.

my main thought on the DBs is that i hope it's more still learning scheme. It seems like sometimes they forget they don't have help over the top like they always had with Bo.

as i've been reading in the papers, we want the other team to throw the deep fade, it shows that they can't do anything else and sure if they complete it it's a big play, but that's only supposed to be happening at like a 50% clip, not the rate it happened with USA. It's hard throwing that fade route, if we get a way better bump at the line of scrimmage it will disrupt the timing and make it even harder to complete. As some have said, Davie didn't have horrible position, just didn't make a play on the ball at all. it was more the holding or PI that could have been called that worries me.

Riley has stated that his number 1 goal is to stop the run. He says it is proven over time that stopping the run and being flexible in the passing game leads to wins.

Now, we're coming off of 6 years of Bop. So we're used to having great secondaries and horrible run D.

Bop and Riley literally have exact opposite views on Defense. We'll just have to get used to it. We aren't exactly getting fucking torched through the air....we're just used to shutting teams down through the air.

I'm happy stopping the run first, personally.

Nothing more mentally/physically degrading than being run on all day long.

That being said, stopping the run first was a Charlie McBride view. Riley and company have been briefed on Husker fan concerns regarding rush defense and is just parroting what they need to hear.

Nebraska Rush Defense: 16th

BYU Rush Offense: 113th (2014 47th)(2013 10th)
S. Alabama Rush Offense: 105th (2014 51st)(2013 60th)
Miami, FL Rush Offense: 57th (2014 48th)(2013 72nd)

Looking at BYU and USA, it could be deduced that Nebraska's rush defense has indeed improved as they take a minimum 50% part in those rush offense numbers being down.

Particularly in BYU's case.

Boise St rush defense is T-99 after playing Washington and BYU.

2014 Oregon St rush defense: 51
2013 Oregon St rush defense: 88

^^^ Doesn't tell me his priority was stopping the run previously^^^

it was funny, i was checking up on Bo the other day and some writer said Bo's D was designed to stop the run first. did he change styles going to YSU or does the writer not know anything?

With no pass rush, the cornerbacks will eventually run out of time and be exposed.

Am I the only one who thinks Akinmoladun had more upside even within this season than Gangwish as an effective pass rusher?

Over time he will obviously become a stronger player than Gangwish, but I think he might just become a better option over the course of this season.

Looks like opposing coaches have a book on the Mark Banker pass defense and they all share it. 119th in the country.

Only three teams have had 90 or more passes attempted against them. Tennessee, Rutgers, and Nebraska. Each of those teams is 1-1.

You would think that teams that are thrown against all the time, would lead in sacks. Nope.

All three of those teams averages 2.5 sacks per game, tied for 37th. Nebraska has the least amount of yards per sack of those three teams.

Nebraska had a pretty good pass defense the last seven seasons. Something tells me the Mark Banker pass defense scheme is not very good.

2014 Oregon State allowed 2977 passing yards, record 5-7
2013 Oregon State allowed 3202 passing yards, record 7-6
2012 Oregon State allowed 2919 passing yards, record 9-4
2011 Oregon State allowed 2573 passing yards, record 3-9
2010 Oregon State allowed 2738 passing yards, record 5-7
2009 Oregon State allowed 3056 passing yards, record 8-5
2008 Oregon State allowed 2352 passing yards, record 9-4

That is 46-42, with three losing seasons. Every season had four or more losses, four seasons had six or more losses.

Not exactly sure what this all means, but if Nebraska only rushes four guys, gives the QB all day to pass, looks like Nebraska is on pace to give up around 4,000 yards for the season.

BTW, this pass defense is a lot like Indiana. Too bad Nebraska and Indiana don't meet. We would be able to determine which team is better or worse. Indiana went 4-8 and 5-7 the last two years.

Okay, Okay. Nebraska is a passing team. Miami is 5th in pass defense and averages 3.5 sacks per game, against scrubs though. But, if Miami's pass defense is for real, looking at opening the season 1-2.
