It's not like the Penguins are high & mighty when it comes to cheapshots. They do have Matt Cooke after all.

Every team in hockey either has a goon on the nhl roster, or is one phone call away in the minors. Let's not pretend that the cheap shot artist is some localized anomaly only located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh and their fan-base are allowed to have an opinion on the egregious cheap shots that occurred in this 'game'.

I guess Mario forgot that he played with one of the dirtiest hockey players to ever live. His name is Ulf Samuelsson. I imagine they still want to hang him in effigy in Boston.

This is largely irrelevant to the point of this discussion. You're talking about a completely different era of the NHL, not to mention one that Lemieux has been quoted as saying he disliked immensely. The NHL as we know it today, has changed by leaps and bounds since the days of the clutch & grab. Back in the 90's, this type of behavior would have just been accepted.

As I said before, I don't really have a problem with this promotion by the Islanders. Celebrate it for all it's worth, which in reality, it's not worth very much, at all. That's why I don't care.

I really can't say too much against it, if there was a viewing party for the March 26, 1997 game tomorrow I'd be there cussing out Lemieux's mother.

They aren't celebrating "cheap shots" though. A cheap shot or tow may have taken place. That was just a beatdown that the Pens could not handle. They have every right to revel in that victory, and they will.

How far a team has fallen to revel in a regular season game. You would be a fool to think the dirty play has no relevance in this.

Okay, I admit that the NHL looking into this is ridiculous.

That's way over-the-top. In my opion, it's fine for fans to get into it. When the team endorsed it, then there was a problem. No action needed by the league though. I believe it's in poor taste, but whuddayagonnadoo?!

Basically my feelings on the situation. No issue with the fans doing it, a minor issue with team endorsing, but major issue with NHL getting involved. That's just silly.

It seems over the top, but with the attention this is getting it doesnt make the NHL look very good that is game is celebrated to the casual fan.

If the NHL does not allow this to happen, that'll be some bullshit. I would be outraged if I were an Isles fan. They have every right to celebrate that victory.

Don't worry folks, the Iraqi Minister of Information (aka Bill Daly) is looking into things...

Islanders promote party to watch brawl-filled game - USATODAY.com

LOL!!

The NHL doesn't get it. Whenever a fight happens on the ice every fan is out of their seat cheering. Hockey is a popular sport because of the speed of the game & the violence that occurs. Fighting & Big hits are two big reasons fans love the game.

I don't want the NHL to follow the path of the NFL. Goodell has already taken away kickoffs for the most part because he thinks their too violent. What's next changing the league altogether to the NFFL(National Flag Football League).

Daly & the league don't like it, but the fans do. The sooner the league realizes this the better because if they want hockey to continue to grow they better not take fighting & hitting out of it.

Hitting is a great part of hockey, but if the NHL wants to grow the sport, they need to remove all of the goonery and cheap shots that are currently in it. Let the skill show what the game is all about. Take away the Trevoe Gillies and Matt Cookes and anyone in between and you would have a great product on the ice. Similar to the Olympics and the World Juniors. Which I would gladly watch over any NHL game because of the flow and skill allowed to displayed due to the lack of shit players that have no business lacing up a pair of skates.

The display that was shown that night on Long Island was not hockey at all. Hockey should be all about the skill the players have.

The physicality in olympic hockey is lame though. Yes the skill on ice is great to watch, but a major reason for my love of hockey is the grit... Something the olympics lacks.

I agree with this. I love the grinders and antagonizers. I'm not crazy about allowing guys come back that have shown a blatant attempt to injure. Cooke obviously falls into this category. I loved watching former Penguins Mike Rupp and Max Talbot. They leave everything on the ice. They aren't cheap players, but will drop the gloves if need be. They're true hockey players.

It's best on best with the Olympics though, the only hitting you're going to get is from defensemen like Weber or (god help us) Phaneuf. Also, as soon as IIHF refs hear a loud noise, the arm goes up and a Canadian is off to the sinbin.

But the skill is there and that's what hockey is about. Not guys that could put on a pair of skates and just go out there and start swinging.

Guys like Lucic, Kunitz, Mike Richards, etc. are great hockey players cause they have a good physical side to their game and can also play the game of hockey.

Having skill at hockey should be the first thing a team looks for when signing a player, not how good he is at swing a fist at someone or how good they are at taking a punch.

If hockey was filled with intense physical guys like listed above, and there was no fighting, I think you would have some great hockey to watch and you would attract more viewers and fans. I personally know a lot more people who hate fighting in the game of hockey than actually like it.

Eliminate all the guys who can't keep up with skill and you would have an amazing product.

Exactly... Thats how I feel. I am completely fine with fighting dwindling down, but the physicality can not be lessened. Like I said olympic hockey is great to watch, but meh, I prefer the NHL, I like edgy play. Not cheap shots, just hard hits.
